More than 50 years ago a group of single mothers from a housing project took to the tracks and stood in front of a train for the sake of their children and community.
Meet the The Militant Mothers of Raymur.
They took action because trains were running on tracks their kids had to cross to get to school. After months of fighting, and repeatedly blocking trains, they won and a pedestrian overpass was built.
This May 7th they'll celebrate the time they "made good trouble" and won against seemingly insurmountable odds.
Smiling proudly on the tracks in this photo (l to r) are: former Raymur kid Liisa Atva, Militant Mothers Barbara Burnet, Joan Morelli and Carolyn Jerome with longtime supporter Muggs Sigurgeirson. We wish them all the best on their event.
