WHALE WEDNESDAY: Every fluke has a story, but this one bears the scars of a survivor. 🐋 Those distinct, parallel white lines on this humpback’s tail are orca tooth rake marks—reminders of a narrow escape from a predator. I spotted this humpback in Sitka back in July, and the history written on its fluke caught my eye immediately. Even as time heals the skin, the pigment stays white, carrying the story of his/her survival for a lifetime. When I submitted this photo to Happywhale, it turned out this individual had only ever been logged once before, just a few days earlier! Grateful to add another piece to this survivor’s journey.

VOLUME UP! Going through my photos and clips last year to build presentations, I came across this memorable experience in Volunteer Point, Falkland Islands. I was minding my own business when this group passes by so close to me and begins to argue amongst each other. When a newcomer arrives, it is blocked and thus newcomer protests loudly. 😂 Always makes me smile to watch this.

Look! A post from Nat with neither whales nor bears 🤭 It’s just gorgeous here in Vancouver this weekend, and since I haven’t picked up my camera since returning from Alaska, I decided it was time to take it out for a spin. Hope you are all enjoying this wonderful October weekend.

Neets Bay . September 2026 . This adorable bear cub got tired watching and waiting for mom to catch some live salmon that it ventured away and tried to catch his/her own salmon. 🤭😍🥰. Even copied mom’s posture in looking for fish.

WHALE WEDNESDAY: This is the famous Ruffles of Hoonah Icy Strait Point. My beloved favourite! he was first spotted in Hawaii in 1988, making him at least in his late 30s. His real name registered with Happywhale is Arpeggio (Juneau), however the past couple of years, he’s been hanging out more often in Hoonah. He is the bubble netting instigator 😂; the master-mind of bubble netting groups. The second photo shows why the locals call him Ruffles (somehow apparently these scars remind them of Ruffles potato chips 🤷🏻‍♀️). The third photo shows why how he is so easily recognizable- with that flap over his fluke notch. Hoping to see more of him next Alaska season! Bye for now Ruffles; hope you make it to Hawaii safely where I know you will be a hit with the females! I wonder how many baby Ruffles are out there…🤔🤭

Bear cub learns from seasoned expert mom where to catch fresh live salmon. Watching this little one mimic mom’s actions is so endearing. Soon they will both go to den but for now, both have to fatten up some more. I love the last photo of both ‘behinds’. 😁

Black Bear Chomping on Freshly Caught Salmon

VOLUME UP! Listen to this bear taking a bite on the salmon he/she just caught in Herring Cove, Ketchikan. This favourite clip just popped up on my memories feed and thought I’d share with you all. I took my phone out as my camera lens wasn’t going to work with this close proximity. 😂 I was standing on the elevated board walk and the bear stops just below me.
