Urban Academy allows students to achieve high academic standards by linking learning to real life.

Established in 2001, Urban Academy was born out of a desire to educate students from JK to Grade 12 in a way that will allow them to be engaged, motivated and excited about learning. Our approach to learning helps each student make a deeper connection to their learning. We do this integrating our three pillars of engagement: the arts, technology and outdoor education. By allowing students to make

Students from Grades 7 to 10 participated in the 3rd iteration of Urban Academy Model United Nations, engaging in a day of fruitful debate and innovative collaboration. 45 delegates signed up for the Disarmament and International Security Committee, making this conference the largest committee to date. Both new and experienced delegates worked together to pass a resolution on the topic of the weaponization of emerging technologies by terrorist organizations.

Congratulations to our honourable mention award winners, Kiyaan (7), Ava (8), Annie (8), Liesl (10), and Daoud (10), as well as the winners of Best Position Paper, Outstanding Delegate, and Best Delegate: Kinjal (10), Lola (9), and Akilah (10).

Thank you to Anika, Nyah, Michael and Aydin for organizing!

Portia joined Urban Academy in Grade 10 and quickly found her place through her love of performing. With a background in dance, she became a mainstay in the Theatre Company and Show Choir, even stepping into leadership roles as an Assistant Director and choreographer. For Portia, these programs were about more than just the stage; they were where she connected with new people and shared her passion.

In the classroom, Portia credits Ms. Marsh with helping her navigate her first year at the school. She shares that Ms. Marsh was the first teacher she truly connected with, helping her recognize how she thinks and giving her the tools she needed. That self-awareness has helped Portia as she looks toward the future and prepares for an exciting new chapter.
Portia is pursuing her goal of joining the military as she has been accepted into Avionics Engineering Technology, where she is excited about the uniform and structure of a technical career in the forces. Congratulations, Portia! We know you’ll excel in this next adventure.

A***n is a familiar face across the Urban Academy athletic program, having participated in every sport the school has offered him since joining in Grade 5. While he is a versatile athlete, his true impact was felt on the basketball court. Serving as the captain of the boys’ basketball team for the majority of his Senior School career, A***n focused on leading by example. He dedicated himself to his game, balancing a high scoring average with his role as a mentor to his teammates through every win and loss.

This commitment to personal growth was mirrored in the classroom through the support of teachers like Mr. Twaites, Mrs. Hibberd, and Mr. Valiao. Their belief in A***n encouraged him to strive for his best and develop the academic discipline required for post-secondary and beyond.

A***n’s favourite memories are the simpler ones, like the cultural trip to Japan in the Spring of 2025 with the long bus rides through the countryside, sharing jokes and laughs with his closest friends.
Next, A***n is heading to UBC Okanagan to begin his studies in Political Science. With his sights set on Law School and a future career in corporate law, he is ready to apply the same discipline he showed on the court to his professional goals. Congratulations, A***n!

Throughout his time at Urban Academy, Jamin has always looked for ways to push his potential. He thanks Ms. Herman, who has been a steady mentor these past few years. For Jamin, having a teacher who truly had the "best intentions" for his growth and always offered him the space to show his understanding of a subject helped him excel in his senior STEM courses and guide him to a post-secondary path in science.

For Jamin, the best parts of UA weren't just the subjects he studied, but the adventures he shared with the people around him. His favourite memories are built on those shared experiences like the Grade 8 trip to Camp Strathcona, where "roughing it" under a massive tent was made better by late-night laughs in the cabins. Whether he was performing with the student-led Jazz Band or competing on the Badminton team, Jamin always valued the bond of working alongside his friends.

This fall, Jamin is taking that same dedication to UBC Science. He is excited to explore his interests in Data Science, Mathematics, and Biology as he begins his next chapter. Congratulations, Jamin!
