Yesterday we had the opportunity to meet with Honourable Jessie Sunner, Minister of Post Secondary Education & Future Skills and Honourable Terry Yung, Minister of State for Community Safety and Integrated Services at the New Westminster Campus.
We discussed the sector crisis, and how students are struggling. BC students are dealing with program cuts, waitlists, delayed graduations, reduced course offering and rising tuition costs. We look forward to working with the Ministry as they address these issues to create a sector that is sustainable. Douglas College

Tomorrow, June 21, is National Indigenous Peoples Day!
It is a day to honour the history, cultures, and contributions of Indigenous Peoples across Turtle Island.
The day is a reminder that we gather, live, learn, and work on Native land. It is vital to recognize the deep-rooted histories, traditions, and ongoing resilience of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples.
Not long ago, Indigenous peoples were stripped of their rights to practice ceremony and take pride in their traditions. Yet, despite this, Indigenous communities have preserved their culture, language, and teachings, passing them down through generations.
June 21, the summer solstice, is not only the longest day of the year, but a powerful symbol of renewal and connection to the natural world. It aligns perfectly with the celebration of Indigenous identity, spirit, and strength.
Let June 21st be a time of learning, reflection, and respect. Let’s uplift Indigenous voices, celebrate our cultures, and honour the land we stand on.
Happy National Indigenous Peoples Day. ✊🏽🧡

Today, the Douglas Students Union presented at the Select Standing Committee on Finance to give recommendations for the upcoming 2027 BC Budget.
Institutions’ budgets are in the red, programs + services are being cut, and layoffs are happening all over the province. The sector needs an immediate re-investment of 200 million so that rising costs and inflation are not downloaded onto the backs of already struggling students and their families!
