Making Agriculture Sustainable in the Hazeltons

Happening this afternoon!

Join us at a demonstration site near you, and learn about the Common Field Project: Crop Demonstrations for Climate Elasticity. The project is exploring the viability of new crops, including camelina, teff, faba beans, sweet corn and dry-farming squash (pumpkins). The project team will provide an overview of the project, hear from the farm partner about their interest in these crops along with a guided field tour, and discuss some climate and weather decision tools that may be helpful for your operation.

When and Where:
September 1st – 1p.m. to 3p.m. in McBride
September 8th – 4p.m. to 6p.m. in Kispiox Valley

Additional events in Quesnel and Vanderhoof are currently being planned, and dates will be confirmed shortly.

Our first Apple pressing event of 2026- so far we’re at 60 L will probably get 100 today!

The calls are coming in about apple pressing! People are wondering how many containers to bring. If you are canning, you can pour directly into one litre mason jars (bring a funnel, there will be some on site) or if you are freezing, any freezer safe container is fine just leave room for expansion (one thumb worth of air should be okay). Hello everybody! We have reopened our office and yesterday had some meetings to start planning out the Apple pressing season. We will be announcing dates and locations by the end of the week for old Hazelton, New Hazelton, and Telkwa. Volunteers are always welcome and increased capacity means we can do more events.

And the results are in from Kispiox Valley Music Festival Society! This year we collected 130.13 kg of food scraps from hospitaliy - that's a big jump from 2024 total of 90 kg. A big thanks to the Hospitality Coordinator Hammer Rilys Amarylis who was an amazing composting champion!

NOTICE TO MEMBERS and COMPOSTING CLIENTS: Our partnership with Bulkley Canyon Ranch is coming to an end as CN Rail has purchased their farm to support critical infrastructure work beside their property. As a result, MASH HQ as well as the two people who make everything happen, Laurie and Bill, will be moving as of July 31. We appreciate your understanding during this time of transition. To support the complex logistics, it is necessary to put all programs on pause until August 10 effectively immediately. Apologies for the inconvenience and we look forward to re-opening in two weeks.

What's happening the last weekend in July? Kispiox Valley Music Festival! MASH will be collecting food scraps from the Hospitality zone once again! In 2024, we collected 90 kg of food scraps (2025 there was no festival).
