What am I paying attention to as a School Trustee candidate?
Over the past few weeks, I’ve spent a lot of time reading, asking questions, attending meetings, and most importantly, talking with people in our communities.
As those conversations continue, there are a few areas I’m paying particular attention to:
• Seeing and supporting the individual student
I want to better understand how we’re supporting students who need additional help, including students with Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and learning differences. Are students getting the support they need? Are there opportunities for earlier intervention? And are there times when policies or processes make it difficult to respond to the needs of an individual child?
• Access to opportunities and the transportation that makes them possible
Transportation has come up more than once in conversations I’ve had with people in our community. I’ve heard concerns around transportation for students attending school outside their catchment, as well as challenges getting Salmo students to sports, special events and other opportunities that require travel.
Living in a smaller community already means some opportunities require travelling farther to access them. I want to better understand where the transportation gaps are, what limitations the district is working within, and whether there are practical ways to improve access.
• Student wellbeing, safety and belonging
I care about whether our students feel safe, supported and included at school — and whether they know where to turn when they’re struggling. I also want to understand what happens when a student or family raises a concern: Is there a clear path forward? Do they feel heard? And are concerns being addressed effectively?
• Communication, listening and community voice
I believe good decisions start with listening. Students, families, educators and community members all see different pieces of our education system, and those perspectives matter. Part of representing Area 2 well means staying connected to our communities and bringing what I hear with me to the Board table.
This isn’t meant to be a final list of priorities. I expect what I’m paying attention to will continue to grow and evolve as I learn more and hear from more people throughout Area 2.
