A native of Niagara Falls Ontario, John Hall completed a Bachelor of Music degree at the University of Western Ontario in 1974, majoring in Theory and Composition with organ as his major applied instrument. While at Western in London Ontario, he studied acoustics and learned the fundamentals of piano tuning and repair. He also was a chorister and assisted as organist and choir director at St. Through his years at university up to the present he has been commissined to compose works for church, theatre and film. John Hall started his piano business in 1977 in the Kingston, Ontario area and has maintained a career as a church musician since then. In addition to this, John Hall has maintained an involvement in theatre as an actor and musical director over the years. This has included work with the Kingston Meistersingers, the Kinsman Musical Theatre, Thousand Islands Playhouse and most recently, the Lennox and Addington Community Theatre. John Hall spent 10 years in Calgary AB, where he helped start the Cantos Music Museum, which has now evolved into the National Music Centre. In 2000, he became the organist at the Anglican Cathedral Church of the Redeemer in Calgary and also assumed responsibilities as Choir Director in 2005. He returned to the Kingston area in 2009, purchasing an historic home in Napanee where he set up a museum dedicated to the Canadian piano industry. The Canadian Piano Museum now attracts people from all over the world. he accepted the position of Director of Music at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Kingston. John Hall is known as a piano and organ technician, church musician, actor, composer and museum curator.

This was years back, but it was an honour to restore this 1777 Frederick Beck Square Fortepiano. It is believed to be the oldest functioning piano in Canada and one of the oldest in the world. Thank you to Carleton University, all the generous donors and alumni and everyone else who was in involved in making this restoration possible. It was truly a joy to work with this instrument!

The new mystery in Kingston: When did the clock towers in Kingston stop ticking? Check out the article below in The Kingston Whig Standard. They examine three major towers in Kingston: St. George's Cathedral, St. Andrew's Church (location of my organist and choir director position), and Queen's' Grant Hall. As I state in the article "I'm going to make an attempt to get 'er going" at St. Andrews. Thank you to The Whig for spotlighting these gems in history.
