Dr. Edginton visited VIU in 2009 to sign the agreement that designated it a home to a World Leisure Centre of Excellence. His family and friends are in out thoughts as we give thanks to his many contributions to the WLO and leisure studies.
Today, we mourn the loss of Dr. Christopher R. Edginton, a beloved leader in the global leisure community and former Secretary General of the World Leisure Organization. Dr. Edginton dedicated his life to advancing the field of leisure and touched countless lives through his visionary leadership and passion for youth development. His contributions to the WLO and the broader leisure community will never be forgotten. Our deepest condolences to his family and all those who were impacted by his work.

Students who participated in the 2023 World Leisure Centres of Excellence field school before attending the 2023 World Leisure Congress at the University of Otago capped off their learning with PechaKucha style presentations. The students' presentations focused on four themes: Inclusive Leisure, Deviant Leisure, Youth, and Maori Culture.
Undergraduate students from Vancouver Island University (VIU) and graduate students from VIU, Texas State University, and Western Sydney University spent four days in an intense program designed to provide them with a greater appreciation of, and willingness and ability to act for, the leisure needs and interests of underrepresented and marginalized communities. As part of this, students engaged in several leisure experiences and activities offered in and by local communities, including the Māori and Pacifica communities, the q***r community, and those working to support the leisure needs of people with disability issues. They even volunteered at a penguin sanctuary!
The final part of the experience was reflecting on their learning at the World Leisure Congress. https://youtu.be/nFFYPZ-DRS4
