Congratulations to a few grads for completion of your training! Best of luck!! 👏

Congratulations to our six newest Conservation Officers, who will soon start serving their communities after their successful completion of training.

Recruits graduated from the Western Conservation Law Enforcement Academy last week, a joint recruit training initiative between natural resource agencies from BC, Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and the Yukon.

The new BC recruits will now embark on a 12-month field training program with a veteran Conservation Officer as they refine their knowledge and skills gained during WCLEA. These positions are filling existing vacancies.

The new Conservation Officers are:
• Katherine Brewer, Mackenzie
• Spencer Kunzli, Salmon Arm
• Joshua Neary, Kamloops
• Isaiah Peters, Mission
• Joshua Peters, Prince George
• Calvin Rochon, Squamish

Congratulations to all!

Dear RMOT Family,

It is with great sadness that we share the news that John Merriman passed away on August 8, 2022.

John Merriman joined the RMOT teaching faulty in 1987 after a career working as a BC Conservation Officer. He instructed with the RMOT program full time until 2004. After retiring from full-time teaching, John continued to be involved with the RMOT program as a sessional instructor until 2018 and also served as a committee member on the RMOT advisory committee. He was an amazing mentor, teacher, colleague, and friend who will be greatly missed. John was key in creating the strong foundations on which the RMOT programs stand; through example, he helped create the amazing collegial, positive, and professional culture of the RMAP department and programs. Most importantly, he was a genuinely caring individual.

All of us in the RMOT department are feeling the loss. In June, John Merriman joined the RMOT faculty for lunch to celebrate John Morgan's retirement - it is a lunch that those of us that were there will remember fondly and cherish. We know that many of you will have similar memories of great conversations you had with John.

John requested no service be held, and his wife, Barb, has requested no flowers be sent. If anyone would like to donate to VIU's Mike Merriman Memorial Fund in John's memory, the family would very much appreciate it.

Sincerely,

RMOT Faculty
