It’s one thing to read about fire safety; it’s another to stand in front of the heat.
At Safer Ocean Systems, we believe the best way to learn is by doing. Our STCW Marine Emergency Duties (MED) training at the Nanaimo campus takes you out of the manual and puts you directly in front of the live-fire line.
There is a unique kind of confidence that comes from feeling the intensity of a controlled blaze and knowing you have the skills to handle it. Whether you are starting your maritime journey or updating your certifications, our drills are designed to build both competence and composure. Our experienced instructors are there every step of the way to ensure you walk away with the confidence to lead in a crisis.
We provide all the professional safety gear you need: you just bring the focus.
Ready to step up your safety game? Join us for our next session and gain the certification you need to excel at sea.

We’ve all heard those flustered unprofessional people on the VHF radio before: clutching the radio like a lifeline, wondering if "10-4" is a thing at sea (spoiler: it’s not).
There’s a big difference between talking on a radio and actually communicating on one. When the wind is howling and the signal is weak, the last thing you want is "radio stage fright." Our ROC-M course is designed to turn those awkward "Uh... hello?" moments into "Roger, standing by on 16."
Whether you’re heading out for the commercial fishing season or running a local tour boat, sounding like a pro isn't just about looking the part: it's about safety, efficiency, and making sure you're heard clearly when it matters most. Plus, it makes life a lot easier for everyone else on the water!
Ready to upgrade your radio game and get certified? Our instructors bring real-world experience to the classroom so you gain the confidence to handle any situation on the airwaves.

Join us in celebrating the women at BC Ferries who connect the coast.
Today is the International Day for Women In Maritime, a global day led by the International Maritime Organization - IMO recognizing the contributions of women across the maritime industry and the importance of building a more inclusive future at sea and ashore.
Women remain significantly under-represented in maritime worldwide, making up approximately 1% of seafarers globally and 19% of the broader maritime workforce according to IMO data. The good news is that the number of women around the world choosing this sector as a career continues to grow.
At BC Ferries, women make up 34% of our overall workforce. While there is still more work to do, we’re seeing encouraging progress, including a 46% increase in the number of women working in Deck, Engineering and Trades roles over the past seven years.
Today is an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the women helping shape the future of the maritime industry at BC Ferries and around the world.
