Intersections
Intersections are one of the most dangerous places a rider will ever face because they combine speed, distraction, poor judgment, and split-second decisions in one space. A driver may be rushing to beat a light, looking past you instead of at you, turning without fully checking, or simply not expecting a motorcycle to be there at all. That is what makes intersections so dangerous for riders. You can do many things right and still be put at risk by someone elseβs mistake.
One of the biggest traps riders fall into is trusting the right of way too much.
Having the right of way does not mean you are protected. It only means you were supposed to be.
At an intersection, that difference matters. A green light, a clear lane, or a waiting vehicle does not guarantee safety.
Riders need to approach intersections with caution, not confidence, because confidence does not stop a car that suddenly turns, rolls forward, or pulls out.
That is why smart riders slow down enough to give themselves time.
Time to see.
Time to judge.
Time to brake.
Time to move if they have to.
Watch for the clues that tell you a vehicle may not stay where it should.
Front tires beginning to roll, a driver looking in another direction, hesitation followed by sudden movement, or a vehicle creeping forward can all tell you more than a turn signal ever will.
If something looks uncertain, treat it like a threat until it proves otherwise.
Intersections are also where rusty skills show up fast, especially early in the season. If your braking is sloppy, your scanning is late, or your reactions are dull after time off the bike, an intersection will expose that in a hurry.
That is why riders should practice controlled braking, smooth stops, and quick visual scanning before getting deep into traffic again. You do not want your first hard braking moment of the season to happen because somebody gambled with your lane.
A rider who treats every intersection with respect is not riding scared.
They are riding smart.
Preparation matters more than reaction, and awareness matters more than assumption.
At intersections, the rider who stays ready is often the rider who stays safe.
