Growing up on Vancouver Island, Jeremy, a recipient of the Joe McPeek Memorial Scholarship, always enjoyed mathematics. What started as an appreciation for patterns and problem-solving in elementary school grew into a passion that led him to VIU, where he is now completing a double major in Mathematics and Computer Science.

As many know, balancing the cost of tuition and living expenses while studying can be challenging. Receiving the Scholarship helped ease some of that pressure and gave Jeremy more room to focus on what matters most: his education.

“Any financial assistance is greatly appreciated. It allows me to focus a little bit more on my studies rather than worrying about how I could make ends meet while I'm here.”

Jeremy is especially interested in how mathematics continues to shape our modern world, from the technology we use every day to emerging fields like coding theory, which helps ensure information can be transmitted accurately across communication networks.

“The work you do with that knowledge can change people’s lives in ways they may appreciate, but not necessarily fully understand.”

For Jeremy, that's the ripple effect of education: knowledge creates opportunity, opportunity leads to innovation, and innovation can improve lives in ways both large and small.
