Every Child Matters.🧡👋🏽

Today, we wear orange.

For the children who never made it home.
For the Survivors who did.
For the families and communities who continue to carry the impacts of residential schools.

Orange Shirt Day is more than something we wear. It is a day to remember, to honour, to listen, and to acknowledge the truth of what happened to our children.

We honour the little ones who deserved to grow up surrounded by their families, their languages, their cultures, their ceremonies, and the love of their communities.

We honour the Survivors who carried their stories home.

And we honour the generations who continue to reclaim what was never meant to be taken from us.

May our children always know how deeply they are loved. May they know where they come from. May they grow up proud of who they are, surrounded by culture, kinship, language, and community.

Today and every day, we remember.

Every Child Matters. 🧡

This day invites us to make time for remembrance, learning, and reflection. We might attend a local gathering, listen to Survivors’ stories, read or watch resources created by Indigenous people, or spend time learning about the history and ongoing impacts of residential schools. Wearing orange can be one way to honour Survivors and remember the children whose lives were taken, disrupted, and forever changed.

How we spend the day matters because truth and reconciliation require us to confront the histories that have shaped the places where we live, learn, and work. This includes recognizing how colonial histories continue to shape education and the lives of Indigenous children, families, and communities today.

As a network connected to early childhood education, we have a responsibility to keep learning, to listen to Indigenous voices and knowledge, and to consider how our everyday practices and institutions participate in ongoing colonial relations. The work of reconciliation cannot be contained within a single day. September 30 offers an opportunity to pause, deepen our understanding, and consider how we carry this responsibility into the days and years ahead.

We encourage you to spend September 30 learning, remembering, and reflecting, and to seek out Indigenous-led resources and gatherings in your community.

There is something so comforting about being read to, learning the craft of sharing stories, and the connections behind them. Social emotional connections and the art of guiding and caring is so easily found in beautiful children’s stories. First Year ECEC students start their day with stories and connection. Some new favourite authors discovered in today’s class: Roz McLean (from Courtenay, BC) and Monique Gray Smith (from Victoria, BC).

First Year ECEC students went to Colliery Dam Park yesterday to remind themselves that self regulation and co-regulation are often simpler when we get outdoors amongst the trees and listen to the birds, put our hands in the mud and explore the beautiful creations that catch the sunlight.
