Happy World Teacher Day! 🍎

Today, we celebrate the incredible teachers at Sturgeon Composite High School who show up every day with dedication, patience, passion and heart.

Thank you for inspiring our students, believing in their potential, and making a difference—not only in the classroom, but in the lives of the young people you teach.

Your impact reaches far beyond a lesson or a grade. Thank you for helping our Spirits learn, grow and find their path.

We appreciate you today and every day!

Orange Shirt Day at SCHS
Thank you to our students and staff who were wearing orange today in support of truth and reconciliation and to honour residential school survivors.
Tomorrow, September 30, there will be no classes as communities across Canada mark the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation—honouring survivors and remembering the children who never returned home.

Tomorrow we wear orange to honour residential school survivors, recognize the ongoing intergenerational impacts of residential schools, and affirm that Every Child Matters.

Orange Shirt Day began in 2013 after residential school survivor Phyllis Webstad shared her story of having her orange shirt taken away on her first day at residential school.

🧡 Why Orange?

Orange is the colour that symbolizes Truth and Reconciliation. It comes from the story of Phyllis Webstad, a residential school survivor.

For her first day at St. Joseph Mission Residential School, Phyllis was excited and wore her favourite orange shirt. When she arrived, her shirt was taken away—and she never saw it again. Her orange shirt became a symbol of the loss of identity and culture experienced by so many Indigenous children.

🧡 On Tuesday, September 29, we invite all SCHS students and staff to wear orange in honour of Phyllis’s story and all those affected by the legacy of residential schools.

Every Child Matters.

Truth & Reconciliation Week
Continuing our truth-telling, here’s a fact you may not know:
In 2016, Canadian music legend Gord Downie released The Secret Path to share the story of Chanie Wenjack, a residential school student who escaped and attempted to walk 600 km home. Sadly, Chanie never made it home.
Downie later founded the Chanie Wenjack Foundation, raising millions to support reconciliation and Indigenous communities.
More to come this week.

Truth & Reconciliation Fact

In 2015, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission released 94 Calls to Action to address the legacy of residential schools.

11 years later, only 15 have been completed, according to an independent watchdog. There is still much work to be done.
