July 1st is Canada Day, but July 1st is also known as Memorial Day. A day of remembrance for the province’s war dead, particularly those who fell at the Battle of Beaumont-Hamel during the First World War.
On July 1, 1916, during the opening day of the Battle of the Somme, what was meant to be a decisive Allied offensive became one of the deadliest days of the First World War.
Amid relentless machine-gun and artillery fire, over 800 Newfoundlanders went into battle. By the next morning, only 68 answered roll call.
Their bravery and loss are forever etched in our history.
Today, we honour the courage and sacrifice of the Newfoundland Regiment at Beaumont-Hamel.

Brother Matt Middleton and his daughter Lily, were proud to present Rainbow Riders Therapeutic Riding with $500 on behalf of Saint John's Lodge No.1, sponsoring their 2026 Show Season. After the success of last year's inaugural sanctioned horse show under the Newfoundland and Labrador Equestrian Association, Rainbow Riders has expanded their show schedule to include both a Welcome show in June, and a Finale show in October.

"Rainbow Riders is Newfoundland and Labrador’s only nationally certified therapeutic riding centre. For over 30 years, it has been a source of strength, inspiration and friendship for young people with physical, cognitive and mental health needs. For a rider in a wheelchair, the horse becomes their legs, providing them a sense of freedom. A child with autism makes connections. Community grows. Magical things happen.

Our para-equestrian athletes will compete alongside able-bodied riders from across the province. These one-of-a-kind events celebrate the talent, dedication, and determination of our riders—proving that ability, not disability, defines what’s possible." Erin O'Reilly, Executive Director of Rainbow Riders. For more information on Rainbow Riders, please visit the links below.
