Theatre On Ice Camp is a workshop designed to empower the individual
to create figure skating routines that are inspirational, celebrated,
and revolutionary. Throughout Canada's illustrious figure skating history, the routines
that stood out have been not just technically outstanding, but
artistically dazzling. What sets these performances apart? Captivating performances and art; a painting; a boo
k; a play; a song or a movie usually contain two
compelling elements. We fall in love with the character(s) and we are
drawn in by a really good story. This truth is no different for a figure skating performance. And this is where Theatre On Ice comes in. For the skaters we instill theatre and screen acting skills so that
they not only understand these two components, but incorporating them into their performances becomes second nature. Beyond the status quo of technique and repetition we explore why
the skater is out there and what is the story they are telling. We
explore how to draw an audience in and make them want to know what is happening, come along on this journey and demand to know how it ends. We also concentrate on creating compelling characters /
personalities. That can mean an exaggeration of themselves, an
existing character, or a creation of their own. With this
new skill set the skater will know how to become this character, draw
an audience in, so they are feeling what the skater wants them to feel
and the audience is living vicariously through the skater along this
journey. Our attack begins in the classroom, forgetting for a moment that we
are skaters and become actors first. We then take that acting mentality
and translate it to the frozen rink. Skills utilized on stage, in front of a camera are now used on the ice, seen in the skaters eyes, their body, arms and legs, right down through their skates. By teaching the skater story and character first, they will elevate the
artistic achievement of their routines, creating worlds for audiences to be a part of which they won't want to leave.
