The carnival sure was busy! I spent the whole night counting kids and chickens… 1,2,3??? Oh there’s 4, wait now there are 6 kids and 2 chickens?! Phew! Thank goodness for grade 4 helpers!
At one point though I turned around to spot this sweet grade 1 student rocking his favorite chicken. Just too much cuteness for one night!

Today was Family Carinval night! The school yard was a buzz of activity and there was so much to see and do.
Of course we took the opportunity to show off our chickens too!

Our Polish chickens sure are popular for their funky hair.
The names the kids give these ones are adorable:
Elvis
The king
Harry Styles
Oreo
Pickles
And my person favorite … Noodle!

The chickens exploring their few range space!
We are sure looking forward to Stang Homestead helping us turn our fence into an edible hedge.

It rained! Now you can see how our water collection works! This water supply will help us refill our in coop water dishes but also give the chickens places to drink from while free ranging.

Today our fence gaps were fixed by Mr. L our makerspace teacher and the fabulous Stang Homestead!
This means the chickens are now officially able to “free range” on our farm! We are going to keep extra eyes on them while they explore this week just to be sure they don’t run into any trouble.
Now we have to practice the number one farm rule of all time….
Shut the gate!

Well today the kids of 3H decided we have full on teenagers in the coop! They certainly are beginning to look like their adult selves!
So we tried to capture them in photos but well…. 24 chickens and 24 kids in +24 sunshine meant there was way too many giggles and chaos to get photos of them all.
Here are the ones we managed to catch!

Anyone else hot?! 1L was hot so they took a break in the shade at the coop today.
You would not believe how big everyone is! Just a blink and they look all grown up! The chickens sure have grown this week too. 😜
Our grade ones are looking forward to grade two and our chicks are looking forward to being nearly big enough to free range!
All we need now before we can let them out is some fencing gaps to be repaired. Stang Homestead has graciously arranged to have that work done. We are so excited!

Natural rain water collection.
One of the ways we sustain our day to day coop operations is my collecting water from the roof top drains. We place containers under them and then we can refill the chickens water dishes with them.
Once the chickens are big enough and are free to roam the yard they will be able to drink directly from these containers.
We love summer when this system works so well. Winter is another story!

Our Learning Farm had some VIP guests this week.
Our School Council members and Stacey Buga - Sturgeon Public Schools Ward 5 Trustee were hosting a fundraiser at the school for the playground.
When they were finished we were honoured to take them on a tour of the coop.

“Worm Farm” part 3.
Introducing the “worm farm”. The kids loved diving in the dirt this week. They found centipedes, worms, and all kinds of grubs.
They saw roots and felt deep rich soil.
They also discover glass, tons of broken glass under our storage shed. We safely gathered and removed the glass. It was a reminder of what our space used to be.
The area that is now our coop was previously an unused space that was frequently vandalized. Choosing to put the coop here has actually helped us reclaim the space and has prevented the regular occurring vandalism.
It’s now a space of light and joy!
