Are you using the same password for multiple accounts?

This is how most "hacks" happen these days:

1. A person signs up for a digital account (e.g. Marriot Hotels) with their email address, and uses their favourite password.

2. That person signs up for another digital account (e.g. CRA), and uses the same email address and the same password.

3. Marriot is infiltrated by hackers, who steal all of the usernames and passwords of anyone who made an account with them, and proceed to post the accounts with their respective e-mail addresses and passwords on the dark web for all to see.

4. Scammers/thieves take the account information and try the same email address and password combinations on other sites (e.g. CRA, Facebook, etc), and gain access, stealing everything they can find, and attempting to scam the person's friends by pretending to be the person and asking for their financial help.

CRA cyberattacks impacted four times as many accounts as previously believed In a major update to the impact of a series of credential stuffing attacks on government websites including the Canada Revenue Agency, the country's top information officer now says that 'suspicious activities' have been found on 48,500 CRA user accounts.

This afternoon reminded me that after the crazy storms in life, there will always come a time of clear skies - and sometimes even rainbows!
