Yesterday, Prof. Cukurova delivered the SALTISE 2024 keynote speech, “Interplay of Learning, Analytics, and Artificial Intelligence in Education.”

His talk offered a comprehensive view of AI’s role in education, emphasizing its interplay with cognitive processes. He challenged the narrow view of AI as mere tools, highlighting its diversity and potential to enhance human learning. The talk revisits early AI research, advocating for a renewed connection between AI and human intelligence.

Three key AI concepts in education are explored: externalizing cognition, internalizing AI models to influence thought processes, and extending human cognition through integrated AI systems. Prof. Cukurova called for a balanced perspective, recognizing AI’s limitations and advocating for systems that support human agency and enhance, rather than replace, human cognition. The presentation concluded with a call for broader education about AI and innovation in educational systems to stay relevant in an AI-driven world.
