I’ve worked with a lot of athletes who train hard but still feel like something is off.
Not in their skill. Not in their work ethic.
In how they show up when it actually counts.
That gap between practice and the real thing — that’s not a physical problem.

I wrote this because nobody gave me a straight answer on it when I needed one.

I spent fifteen years learning to perform.

On the ice, in the locker room, in front of coaches. Always performing. Always managing how I looked instead of actually feeling what was going on.

Nobody taught me any different. Nobody taught you either.

That’s not a criticism — that’s just how hockey works. You train your hands, your skating, your reads.

The stuff going on inside you? You figure it out on your own, or you don’t figure it out at all.

Six chapters on what I actually learned.

“Be confident” is the most useless advice in hockey.

Confidence isn’t something you decide to have. It’s something that emerges when you stop fighting what’s happening inside you.

One of the hardest things about watching your child struggle is feeling like you should be able to fix it.

You can’t always fix it. But you can be there in a way that makes them feel safe enough to figure it out themselves.

The moment that changed everything wasn’t a win. It wasn’t a great game or a big contract.

It was a fractured jaw. And the relief I felt when I found out I couldn’t play.

That relief told me something I hadn’t been willing to hear.

If your player is going through the motions — performing without joy — this book is for them.
