Le programme du colloque « La musicologie publique : une « étude sérieuse » à vocation publique » qui aura lieu à Montréal les 27 et 28 février 2025 est disponible!

Dès sa fondation la musicologie s’impose comme une science dont la vocation est d’être publique. Toute une terminologie a émergé pour désigner les pratiques de partage des savoirs musicaux auprès de publics non-experts. Selon les langues, les pays et les époques, on parle de « music appreciation », « outreach », « vulgarisation », « music education », etc. Ce colloque international sur la musicologie publique souhaite créer un dialogue entre le milieu académique et le milieu pratique, pour réfléchir aux modalités par lesquelles nous faisons acte de médiation de notre expertise.

The program for the colloquium “Public musicology: a ‘serious study’ with a public vocation”, to be held in Montreal on February 27 and 28, 2025 is now available!

From its very beginning, musicology has been seen as a science with a public vocation. A whole terminology has emerged to designate the practice of sharing musical knowledge with non-expert audiences. Depending on the language, country and era, we speak of “music appreciation”, “outreach”, “dissemination”, “music education” and so on. The aim of this international symposium on public musicology is to create a dialogue between academic and practical circles, to reflect on the ways in which we mediate our expertise.

1. Music Mediation and the Socio-Ecological Transition
"How do the participatory and socially engaged musical practices supported by music mediation contribute, in their “intervention strategies” (Fourcade 2014), to reflection on territorial transformation, and can they become accelerators of this socio-ecological transition? In short, what happens when music mediation encourages reflection on socio-environmental issues? "

2. JAZZ ENCOUNTERS - Foundations and potentials of a jazz-oriented music mediation
"There are attempts to establish a discourse on jazz education research (Norgaard 2024) as well as artistic research in jazz (Kahr 2022). Between those disciplines music mediation remains a relatively blind spot in the jazz-related academic world. In 2024 a conference on music mediation in jazz took place at the Gustav Mahler Private University of Music in Klagenfurt (Austria), which revealed a variety of exciting perspectives and approaches as well as a great desire for professional and academic exchange. It gave rise to the idea of dedicating the third issue of the International Journal of Music Mediation to the topic of music mediation in jazz. We intend to turn the spotlight on foundations and potentials of a jazz-oriented music mediation."

[APPEL À COMMUNICATIONS📣] L'Elder Conservatorium de l'The University of Adelaide en Australie sera l'hote d'un colloque sur la médiation et la musique les 9 et 10 juin 2025. Organisé par Naomi Sunderland, directrice du Creative Arts Research Institute de Griffith University, les conférences et ateliers de plusieurs formats touchant 8 thèmes sont acceptés.

" Mediation, in all its senses, from transmission to conflict resolution, is particularly relevant in times of technological innovation, sustainability challenges, forced displacement and struggles for equality or survival. This conference, generously supported by the Musicological Society of Australia (MSA), is concerned with the ways music and the study of music may contribute to the many theories and practices around mediation."
