🌲 Big Lonely Doug, the second-largest Douglas-fir in Canada, towering at 66 meters (216 feet) tall with a diameter of 3.8 meters (12.4 feet) on Vancouver Island is approximately 1000 years old. In 2011, logger Dennis Cronin discovered the enormous tree while surveying a patch of forest that was to be logged for timber. He wrapped green ribbon around the tree with the words “Leave Tree” repeated along the ribbon, saving it from being felled. In 2014, photographer and activist T.J. Watt (@tjwatt) happened upon the tree and named it “Big Lonely Doug”, a play on the tree’s species name and its relative isolation amid the clearcut. The surrounding forest was clearcut in 2012, starkly highlighting the contrast between old growth and second growth. Big Lonely Doug has since become a powerful symbol advocating for the preservation of endangered old-growth forests throughout British Columbia.
