PAID STUDY for students who speak English as a second language
We are a research team in the Department of Education at Concordia University conducting a study on second language interaction and we are looking for participants to join our study.
To be eligible for participation, you must:
· speak English as your second language
· be studying at a university
Participation involves a 45-minute session in-person at our lab in Concordia’s Hall building:
· First, you will be asked to engage in a short 10-minute conversation with another participant.
· Second, you will be asked to fill out a survey on your experience
You will receive $30 in cash at the end of the session.

PAID STUDY / ONLINE SURVEY ($30)
We are looking for participants for a paid study to investigate how people perceive and understand second language English speech.
***To be eligible for participation, you must***
(1) Be a monolingual or English-dominant multilingual speaker, or a second language speaker of English
(2) Be a student enrolled in an undergraduate/graduate program at a university in Montreal (e.g., Concordia, McGill)
(3) Be a student who has minimal experience in language training (e.g., teaching English, taking linguistics/phonetics/education courses)
(4) Have access to a computer and an internet connection to complete an online survey
You cannot take the survey if you have participated in this project's 1st or 2nd phase.
***Your tasks***
You will take an online survey (from your own PC when you have free time) and complete the following task:
(1) listening to 40 short audio recordings and providing ratings
(2) filling out questionnaires
Your work will NOT be shared with your teacher or the university so it will not affect your grade.
The survey takes about 1 hour, and once it is successfully completed and submitted, you will be compensated $30 via e-Interac (you have to have a Canadian bank account).

PAID STUDY for international students who speak English as a second language
**Please note that we have only a couple of spots left for this study and we will be sending links on a first-come, first-served basis.**
We are currently recruiting a small number of participants among international students in Montreal who speak English as an additional language (i.e., you have a mother tongue that is different than English) to investigate how students in different instructional contexts perceive and learn from visual images and short lectures.
You will be paid $30 for your time, but you must have a Canadian bank account to receive payment and have lived in Montreal for at least six months.
If you would like to participate, you will complete an online activity using LimeSurvey. It involves looking at pictures of students and answering questions, listening to four short lectures with multiple-choice questions, and answering background questions about yourself. The activities will take you a maximum of 60 minutes.

**PAID STUDY for Arabic speakers learning French**
We are currently seeking participants for a paid study to investigate how listeners understand and evaluate the speech of second language learners of French.
To be eligible for participation, you must:
• Be at least 18 years old
• Be a woman
• Be a student living in Quebec
• Be a speaker of Arabic as a first language (you grew up using mainly Arabic at home, at school, with friends, and you used little to no French as a child and teenager)
• Be able to speak French at a low-intermediate level (A2-B1 level)
• Have access to a computer with microphone (external or internal) and an Internet connection to complete the online tasks required for the study
• Have access to a cellphone with a recording function
• Have a three-ply disposable surgical mask available at hand to use while completing the online tasks if you are selected following the initial interview.
If you meet the abovementioned criteria and would like to participate in the study, please click on the link below to fill out a brief questionnaire that asks for basic demographic information and choose a time that suits your schedule best for a quick interview (5 minutes) that will take place in French either via Zoom or over the phone. Please note that you will not be remunerated for this interview and the information you will leave on this brief questionnaire will not be used for the actual study.

If you are selected following the initial meeting, you will be invited to participate in an online session that will last around 1.5 hours total.
As part of the session, you will:
• Complete a questionnaire about your general background and language use
• Read aloud two sets of 40 sentences in French while being recorded.
You will receive compensation in the amount of $50 (paid via e-transfer) for participating in the study after attending the 1.5-hour online session.

What will you do?
1. Use several scales to share your opinions on 25 images
2. Fill out two brief questionnaires about your linguistic and social background
3. Use several scales to share your opinions about 25 voices. The faces and voices come from university students from diverse racial and ethnic groups.
These tasks are done remotely on LimeSurvey
What will you need?
1. A laptop or a computer with an internet connection.
2. A Chrome or Microsoft Edge/ Internet Explorer browser (The survey does not function properly on other browsers such as Safari)
3. Headphones (to hear the audio files better)
4. A space where you will not be disturbed for the duration of the survey
5. A Canadian bank account that accepts Interac transfer (so that we can transfer you the compensation)
How long will the survey take?
The survey should take about 60 minutes of your time.
What will you get in return?
$30 as a token of our gratitude for your contribution to our study. (The payment will be made online via Interac etransfer)

We are looking for students studying at any University in Montreal who speak English as their first language to participate in our online study on second language English speech and interaction.
Your participation would involve completing an online survey, which involves watching several short videos and providing ratings, filling out questionnaires, and a film task where you will answer multiple choice questions based on a short film you will watch.
The survey takes about 1 hour, and once it is successfully completed and submitted, you will be compensated $20.

Nous recherchons présentement des participant·es pour une étude portant sur la manière dont les Montréalais·es francophones perçoivent l’utilisation du français et de l’anglais comme langues secondes par des personnes ayant une langue maternelle autre.
Cette étude se déroulera à partir du mois de juin jusqu’en août 2020.
Voici les critères de participation
• Vous vous identifiez comme francophone ET le français est votre langue maternelle
• Vous parlez et comprenez un peu l’anglais
• Vous êtes résident·e de la ville de Montréal
• Vous n’êtes pas présentement aux études
• Vous avez accès à un ordinateur avec une connexion internet afin de pouvoir remplir le questionnaire en ligne.
Aucune autre expérience ou qualification n’est requise. La participation implique une session en ligne d’une durée d’environ 45 à 60 minutes.
Dans le cadre de cette session, vous remplirez un questionnaire dans votre langue de préférence (anglais ou français) :
• Vous écouterez de courts extraits audio en français et en anglais et vous enregistrerez votre réponse pour chaque extrait (par exemple, si une personne vous demande son chemin, vous pourriez répondre en donnant des indications).
• Vous évaluerez chaque extrait audio en utilisant l’échelle fournie.
• Vous remplirez plusieurs questionnaires courts concernant votre connaissance des langues et l’utilisation que vous en faites.
Vous recevrez une compensation financière de 30$, payée via transfert électronique, en échange de votre participation à cette étude.

We are currently seeking participants for a study to investigate how French-speaking Montrealers judge the speech of people who speak English and French as a second language.
The study will run from June 2020 through August 2020.
Here are the criteria for participation
• You identify yourself as francophone AND speak French as your native / first language
• You speak and understand at least some English
• You are a current resident of Montreal
• You are currently NOT a student
• You have access to a computer with an Internet connection to complete the online survey
No other experience or qualifications are necessary. Participation involves an online session that will last around 45-60 minutes.
As part of the session, you will complete an online survey in your preferred language (English or French):
• You will listen to short audio clips in French and English and will record your response to each clip (e.g., if you are asked for directions, you might give directions).
• You will evaluate each audio clip by using rating scales.
• You will complete several short questionnaires about your language knowledge and use.
