Today we wish a very happy 184th birthday to Arthur Sullivan, born on this day, May 13th, 1842. 🎂

A talented, ambitious composer, Sullivan was instrumental in the development of the English comic opera tradition and English musical theatre more broadly. This is despite his dreams of producing more serious grand opera, a dream he realized with his opera “Ivanhoe”. Unfortunately for him, he is now primarily remembered for the delightful ballads, songs, and snatches of the 14 Savoy operas he composed with W.S. Gilbert.

The McGill Savoy Society will be producing his first surviving operetta, Cox and Box, in Fall 2026. In Winter 2027, we will produce The Gondoliers, the last critically acclaimed operetta of the G&S partnership.

Want to be like Sullivan? Applications for musical director for The Gondoliers are open now until May 25th! Link in bio to apply.

Happy 182nd birthday to impresario and hotelier Richard D’Oyly Carte, born on May 3rd, 1844.

Born in London, D’Oyly Carte built a massive talent management agency (representing the likes of Oscar Wilde, Clara Schumann, and Arthur Sullivan) and became involved with the comic opera business, making it his mission to develop an English comic opera tradition separate from the French operettas that made up much of the London theatre scene.

To this end, he brought together librettist W.S. Gilbert and composer Arthur Sullivan, leading to a 25 year long collaboration and 14 operettas still performed to this day.

In addition to founding the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company to produce these works, he also built the Savoy Theatre to host it. Beside the theatre, he would build the Savoy Hotel, a luxurious and innovative hotel managed by CĂ©sar Ritz (of later Ritz Hotel fame) and legendary French chef Auguste Escoffier. The hotel, still in use today, became a symbol of opulence and luxury, with its name being used by the likes of the Savoy Ballroom in New York that gave its name to the Jazz standard “Stompin’ at the Savoy”.
