Volunteers promoting public awareness of neuroscience!
We are a bilingual volunteer organization located in Montreal, Quebec with the goal of promoting public awareness of neuroscience. We aim to do so through a variety of free educational events and programs in English and French that we offer to the public, and especially school-aged children. Some current events include:
- Classroom workshops: Volunteers armed with knowledge and fun demonstrations
visit elementary and high school classes around the Greater Montreal area to give an interactive presentation about the brain. Every year this program gets bigger and we reach over 8,000 students across the island.
- Open House: Each year, neuroscience centers across Montreal open their doors to students and the public for exciting workshops, lectures and demonstrations on the brain.
- Montreal Brain Bee: Test your knowledge about the brain! Enter the Montreal Brain Bee to show off your brainy skills and get the chance to win a cash prize and travel expenses to compete nationally at the Canadian Brain Bee and McMaster University.
- Scientific Cafes: Open to the public, a panel of experts come together in a relaxed, informal setting to discuss a topic of interest. Past cafes include Music and the Brain, Alzheimer's and Dementia, and The Power of the Unconscious Mind.
- Euréka Festival: Each summer, BAM volunteers put their creativity to use by presenting a fun, interactive workshop at the Old Port's annual event to bring together visitors of all ages with an interest in science. The Montreal Brain Awareness Week Campaign was launched in 1998 by a group of neuroscience graduate students working at the Douglas Hospital Research Center in Verdun. Today, the campaign is organized through an extensive collaboration between student volunteers from all four universities in Montreal, the Montreal Chapter of the Society for Neuroscience and many local sponsors. Brain Awareness Week is an annual public information campaign originally created in 1996 by the Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives and promoted by the Society for Neuroscience. During Brain Awareness Week, neuroscientists across the world campaign to advance public awareness about the progress and benefits of brain research.
