In the Western world, the binary of human and nonhuman has been examined through a hierarchical relation, one that places the human above the nonhuman because they cannot recognize the nonhuman’s spirit. This mode of thinking has brought us many issues, a large one being the current climate crisis we are living through. However, many Indigenous methodologies approach the human and nonhuman as equal and both having a spirit.

In this clip from our first iteration of the Epistemological Foundation series, distinguished Blackfoot professor Leroy Little Bear speaks to the idea of energy in Blackfoot thought, and how energy waves combine to create “nottáka,” or the spirit. He also extends this reading onto humans and nonhumans, and how they all have a spirit. As Little Bear mentions in this reel, “Everything in that environmental totality is alive… there’s no such thing as inanimate in Blackfoot.”

One of the foundational missions of the Abundant Intelligences research program is to emphasize and be aware of the global diversity of Indigenous peoples. We achieve this by integrating Indigenous-centered research initiatives from various geographic regions, and placing different Indigenous communities in conversation to explore the potential applications of AI.

In the inaugural Abundant Intelligences Epistemological Foundation conversation series, Linda Tuhiwai Smith elaborates on the significance of the term 'Indigenous' in fostering connections among globally diverse Indigenous communities. It is essential to maintain this context when engaging with Indigenous Knowledges.

Meet Abundant Intelligences Co-Investigator Dr. Linda Tuhiwai Te Rina Smith, Distinguished Professor at Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi.

Her academic career is grounded in her love of teaching, and research that makes a transformative difference in Māori, Indigenous, and diverse other communities. Smith is the author of Decolonizing Methodologies, one of the seminal texts in Indigenous studies, decolonial studies, and research methodology.

Decolonizing Methodologies articulates a framework for Indigenous people to undertake research on their own terms and to the benefit of their communities. Her scholarly work inspired and sustains ongoing efforts to re-centre Māori and Indigenous knowledge practices within the academy and in relationship to community.

She will contribute to Abundant Intelligences’ understanding of how to integrate Indigenous and Western research and research-creation methodologies.

"The Upper Limits of Intelligence?"

What if AI could read everything ever written and communicate faster than we ever could? AI pioneer Yoshua Bengio dives into the vast potential of AI to transform fields like medical science, environmental research, and our understanding of climate change.

In this reel from the Abundant Intelligences Epistemological Foundation conversation series, Bengio challenges us to think about the power of AI—and the responsibility that comes with it.

Are we ready to harness these tools responsibly? Who will decide how this power is used? Let’s discuss.

Meet us Monday - Tile #2

This tile represents Oyate, or 'people', and showcases the connection between land and sky.

The Oyate Tile, part of the Abundant Intelligences Global Logo, comes from the Wíhaŋble S’a Pod and is inspired by Lakȟóta visual language. It is a geometric representation of 'people' or 'Nation.'

Because of its close relationship with porcupine quills, the Lakȟóta visual language is composed of lines, triangles, and squares. Repetition, combination, and reflection are also important conventions within the language, as exemplified by the combination of the two triangles that compose the Oyate symbol.

Like most of the tiles in the Wíhaŋble S’a Pod logo, the Oyate symbol is based on Sadie Red Wing’s Master of Graphic Design Thesis, "Learning the Traditional Lakȟóta Visual Language through Shape Play" (North Carolina State University; College of Design, 2016).
