We recently received very sad news that Dr. Futsum Tesfatsion Abbay, a former SEDE colleague and friend passed away last week. His time at SEDE, working on an accessibility project with various faculties, was short compared to his 15+ years at McGill as a Law scholar, researcher, immigration consultant, and advocate for the rights of persons with disabilities, particularly the rights of the visually impaired. To support his family through this difficult time, please consider offering a donation through the link below. Thank you to Sara Saraka for organizing this campaign.

"The passing of Dr. Futsum Tesfatsion Abbay has left his family devastated and in need of financial assistance.

With all of the emotional pain and stress that death brings, it also brings financial burdens. We are trying to raise money for Akberet and their children to help with any costs that will incur and to help wherever needed. As a community, we want to ease any stress on the family caused by the outstanding costs of the funeral and what comes afterward.

It is in these times of loss and sadness when you see people coming together to help one another make it through, to support the people we care for. We are thankful for any support you may be able to provide. We also encourage everyone to keep their family in their thoughts and prayers. You will be missed Dr. Futsum Tesfatsion Abbay, may you Rest in Paradise."

Success story looking for happy ending: Is community-engaged learning in peril at McGill? 04/05/2019

Wonderful reflection by Prof. Vanessa Blais-Tremblay (IGSF, School of Music) on the impact of Community-Engaged Learning on students and faculty working in solidarity with external local partners. Prof. Tremblay also reflects on the need for community-university mediators who help build and nurture equitable, effective and long-lasting relationships.

Success story looking for happy ending: Is community-engaged learning in peril at McGill? My classroom, empty. This is at least how I found it to be at 2:36 PM on October 2, 2018—day 1 of my students’ “research partnerships,” for lack of a groovier word, (and I have searched some!) with…

Thank you, Katherine Zhang, for all your hard work and dedication to this amazing program!

Meet Katherine Zhang, an outstanding Homework Zone mentor! Katherine, who is originally from Calgary, AB, is a U2 nursing student.

This is Katherine's second semester volunteering with Homework Zone. In her time with the program, she has continually impressed with her responsibility, adaptability, compassion and humour. She is adored by all the students she works with!

When asked why she comes back to homework zone, Katherine answered, "I just get so excited to see the kids each week because they bring a lot of joy into my life!"

Her fondest moment was "when '[her] boys' learned how to strut like the beautiful angels they are" (see: https://www.instagram.com/p/Bu_woU3lpv1/)

We at HZ are forever thankful for all the time and laughs she has brought to the program! Thank you, Katherine! We know you will be amazing with whatever you do :D
