It was a busy start to our new session. Tuesday was International Literacy Day, and RECLAIM celebrated with a "lasagna and literacy" luncheon - where over 40 learners, volunteers, partners and senior group participants were in attendance. Carnival games were set up with letters to be won, followed by creating words that earned coupons that could be exchanged for some great 'swag'. Guests left with a snack bag from our “Literacy” candy bar! We were happy to welcome a visit from the Verdun/Lasalle Member of Parliament Mr Claude Guay.
Once the luncheon was over, we made our way over to BGC Dawson for the first day of their after school program. We handed out 53 bags filled with literacy snacks (the snacks spelled out LITERACY) - and a book that the children got to choose (with thanks to Literacy Quebec for helping to provide new books for this event). Finally, a table of new and lightly used books was set up outside of our centre for the public. In all, over 350 books were given out in recognition of International Literacy Day. A huge success. Thanks to all who participated ...

September 8, 2026 marks the 60th anniversary of International Literacy Day!

This day was proclaimed by UNESCO in 1966 to remind policy-makers, practitioners, and the public of the critical importance of literacy for creating a more literate, just, peaceful, and sustainable society.

Literacy is a basic human right.

Literacy organizations around the world exist to assist with the various literacy needs of their community. For over 45 years, the Yamaska Literacy Council has been supporting the English-speakers in Brome-Missisquoi and Haute-Yamaska.

Happy International Literacy Day!

Our summer season got underway yesterday!
Starting with our annual partnership with BGC Dawson, where each Monday we will be providing literacy activities to be used during the week (focusing on different parts of the world thanks to the interest in the World Cup!) As well, we are providing lunches related to the different areas…this week the 82 campers were treated to a ‘charcuterie board’. Can you guess what country we were focused on?
Tuesday our seniors were back in house …this summer expanding upon their mapping project from last summer..where they will be filming oral histories. The catch this year is that our interviewers are the 11-12 year old LIT summer campers from BGC Dawson.
Our first get together was to get comfortable with the 11 year old to 93 year old age spread, with a game of Pictionary, followed by everyone’s favorite..BINGO …then a lunch of sandwiches and treats!
It was a great start to what is shaping up to be a great summer!

📚✨ The Magic of Literacy ✨📚

Last Thursday, RECLAIM Literacy proudly helped organize The Magic of Literacy Fair at the James Lyng Adult Education Centre, bringing together learners, educators, volunteers, and community members to celebrate the transformative power of literacy.

A heartfelt thank you to author Ann Lambert for delivering an inspiring keynote address in the auditorium and sharing her passion for storytelling, learning, and community.

We would also like to extend our sincere gratitude to the dedicated RECLAIM volunteers whose enthusiasm, hard work, and commitment helped make this event such a success. Your support created a welcoming and engaging experience for everyone who attended.

Thank you to all who participated and helped celebrate the magic that literacy brings to our lives. Together, we continue to build stronger, more connected communities through learning.

This past Saturday, we celebrated the Day of Grace, an annual event held in memory of longtime RECLAIM supporter and volunteer Grace Saabas.

The celebration brought our community together for a fun-filled day with learners, volunteers, program participants, and staff. We enjoyed alphabet pancakes, an energetic drum circle, and spirited games of Literacy Jeopardy, all of which honoured what Grace held important: learning, connection, and community.

Thank you to everyone who joined us in honouring Grace’s memory and spirit.
