Very pleased and honoured to showcase a new preprint, stemming from research initiated by Brett Spiess while an undergraduate at Spring Hill College entitled "Catechol chemistry unleashed: Spontaneous reactions in physiologically-relevant media." In this study, we uncover that catecholic compounds may not be as stable in physiologically-relevant conditions as previously assumed. Their spontaneous reactivity could have significant implications for pharmacokinetics and bioactivity due to potential transformations.

This work will, of course, be submitted for peer review -- the gold standard for scientific validation -- but in the meantime, you can check out the preprint here in the Biological and Medicinal Chemistry section of ChemRxiv available at: https://doi.org/10.26434/chemrxiv-2025-5zs9m. For those familiar with the process, please keep your fingers crossed for a smooth and timely review!

Laboratory for Evaluation of Pharmacological

The Laboratory for Evaluation of Pharmacological Agents in Remediation of Disease (LEoPARD) is a biochemistry-focused research group in the Department of Physical and Environmental Sciences at Colorado Mesa University; our researchers are outstanding undergraduate students.

Our research can be divided into several exciting themes, with some overlap between them:

1. Novel antidiabetic therapeutics

While there are currently several “gold standard” drugs on the market for type 2 diabetes mellitus– such as metformin or Glucophage™ — they are not without their respective risks and side-effects. We are especially interested in discovering and characterizing new agents that can be used in the fight against diabetes and other diseases, and determining whether they are improved relative to existing pharmaceutical and nutraceutical agents.
