Wetland restoration is often promoted as a definitive way to support wildlife, improve water quality and help store carbon. However, new research from McGill University suggests the overall climate picture is more complicated.
In a study of human-made marshes along the Bay of Fundy, researchers found that parts of these restored wetlands are releasing methane, a greenhouse gas 27 times more potent than carbon dioxide. The findings highlight the importance of addressing nuances and closely evaluating one-size-fits-all climate solutions.

La restauration des milieux humides est souvent présentée comme un moyen efficace d’assurer la survie des espèces sauvages, d’améliorer la qualité de l’eau et de favoriser le stockage du carbone. Toutefois, une nouvelle étude menée à l’Université McGill montre que la réalité est plus nuancée.
En étudiant des marais aménagés le long de la baie de Fundy, l’équipe de recherche a constaté que certains secteurs de ces milieux humides émettaient du méthane, un gaz à effet de serre dont le pouvoir de réchauffement est 27 fois supérieur à celui du dioxyde de carbone. Ces résultats mettent en évidence l’importance de tenir compte des nuances et d’évaluer rigoureusement les solutions climatiques universelles.

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Prof. Adrian Liu as Associate Dean, Graduate Education and Equity.
He began his five-year term on July 15, succeeding Biology Professor Laura Nilson in this role following her recent appointment as Chair of the Department of Biology.
“I’m honoured to take on this role. Graduate students are a perfect representation of the intersection between training and research that we value so much at a research-intensive university like McGill,” said Liu. “I’m therefore deeply committed to the hard work that it takes to ensure that all our graduate students have the right environment to succeed. Science is driven by humans, and it is incumbent upon us to ensure equitable access to opportunities for our students as they embark on their scientific journeys.”

Estimates of ordinary matter in the universe exceed the amount observed in stars and galaxies, leaving much of it unaccounted for.
Researchers from the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME)/Fast Radio Bursts Collaboration, including McGill University and MIT, have developed a new method to seek out this “missing” matter by combining galaxy locations with fast radio burst detections. A fast radio burst, or FRB, is an ultrabright, millisecond flash of radio waves emitted by extremely energetic phenomena in the distant universe.

Les estimations de la quantité de matière ordinaire présente dans l’Univers dépassent la quantité observée dans les étoiles et les galaxies.
Une grande partie de cette matière n’a donc pas encore été localisée. Une équipe de recherche de l’Expérience canadienne de cartographie de l’intensité de l’hydrogène/sursauts radio rapides (CHIME/FRB), dont font partie des chercheurs de l’Université McGill et du MIT, a mis au point une méthode pour localiser cette matière « manquante » à partir de la position des galaxies et des sursauts radio rapides. Un sursaut radio rapide est une impulsion d’ondes radio ultra-lumineuse de quelques millisecondes émises par des phénomènes extrêmement énergétiques dans l’Univers lointain.

A Medicine Wheel garden inspired by Indigenous teachings is now growing on McGill’s downtown campus, south of Burnside Hall. Circular and divided into four equal quadrants, the garden features to***co, eastern red cedar, sage and sweetgrass, as well as native pollinator plants.
The idea for the garden came from Robin Boulet, a Bachelor of Arts and Science student.
“I was looking for a project that could help uplift and foster a sense of community,” said Boulet. “Knowing I’ve contributed to something that has now grown beyond me into a space for all is so rewarding.”
The garden aligns with McGill’s 52 Calls to Action, which aims to ensure McGill’s campuses reflect McGill’s commitment to Indigenous education.

Un jardin « roue de médecine », inspiré des enseignements autochtones, s’épanouit actuellement sur le campus du centre-ville, au sud du Pavillon Burnside. De forme circulaire et divisé en quatre quadrants égaux, le jardin renferme du tabac, du cèdre rouge, de la sauge et du foin d’odeur ainsi que des espèces indigènes favorables aux pollinisateurs.
C’est un étudiant au baccalauréat ès arts et sciences, Robin Boulet, qui a eu l’idée d’aménager ce type de jardin.
« Je cherchais un projet dynamisant qui puisse renforcer le sentiment d’appartenance à la communauté universitaire, explique-t-il. Ça me fait tellement plaisir de constater que cette réalisation va au-delà de ma personne et que j’ai pu contribuer à l’aménagement d’un lieu ouvert à tous et toutes. »
Ce jardin s’inscrit dans les 52 appels à l’action de McGill, qui ont pour but de rendre visible sur les campus l’engagement de l’Université en faveur de l’éducation autochtone.

AeroCellutions, a student-run team from the McGill BioDesign Club, earned the runner-up spot at the 2026 Biodesign Challenge Summit, held in New York City on June 11–12. Competing against 48 university and secondary school teams from around the world, the team was recognized for developing a biodegradable sorbent to help clean up oil spills.
AeroCellutions is a multidisciplinary team of McGill students from the Faculty of Science, the McGill Faculty of Engineering, the Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (Macdonald Campus of McGill University) and the School of Biomedical Sciences.
