Graduate of the University of Toronto with a degree in Double Bass Performance, the Glenn Gould School of the Royal Conservatory of Music with an Artist Diploma in Double Ba
ss Performance and Nipissing University with a degree in Music Education, Matthew is an alumni of the National Youth Orchestra of Canada and the National Academy Orchestra of Canada. He studied the double bass with Joel Quarrington, who is a rare proponent of tuning the double bass in fifths; this subsequently paved the way for Matthew to learn the cello. A life-changing encounter with the innovative violin teacher Dr. Metro Kozak made this transition possible and progressed into a lifelong mentorship. He has performed at many notable master classes including for Pinchas Zuchermann at the Young Artist’s Program in Ottawa, Maximilian Dimoff and Duncan McTier. He has freelanced regularly in orchestras across Ontario. Matthew’s musical performance experience is quite diverse, he has also performed extensively with salsa, jazz and rock groups. To further his depth in teaching cello, Matthew became a registered Suzuki cello teacher, and uses this system as the foundation of his teaching. The Suzuki Method
The Suzuki Method of education originated from Dr. Shinichi Suzuki, who developed this approach while in Europe studying music and psychology, and who was originally from Japan. The first unit of study for any Suzuki teacher or Suzuki parent is called "Every Child Can", which introduces his philosophy of education. The method is therefore not only a system of teaching music but a philosophy guiding the education of the entire person, whether a child as young as 2 years old or a person who has retired from working and has cello lessons (or another instrument) on their "bucket list"! The idea that every child can comes from the parallel of learning one's own mother tongue language. Dr. Suzuki surmised that if virtually all children have a 100% success rate at learning their own mother tongue, then surely all could develop the necessary skills to be a proficient practitioner of the language of music. Both languages are sophisticated, however the idea that music is supposed to be easy to learn, leads to the belief that only geniuses can be successful at it. Dr. Suzuki in his acclaimed book "Nurtured by Love", explains that it is rather a culture starting from the home, that encourages the development of musical skill is the important key to becoming successful at music education. And furthermore, while a very technical step-by-step approach is taken, the over-all goal of the Suzuki Method is to learn to see beauty in life and to develop a beautiful heart, and a lifetime of appreciation. In terms of a purely proficient musical system, it is a generally accepted statistic that between 50-75% of musicians who successfully audition and are accepted in to the major orchestras in the United States have at least started in a Suzuki Method program!
