Our Faculty Lecturer John Gradek is featured in The Conversation with his article on Canada’s aerial firefighting system. Drawing on his expertise in aviation operations and logistics, John examines the challenges facing Canada’s wildfire response system and argues that effective wildfire management requires more timely deployment and better coordination across jurisdictions.
A relevant read as communities across Canada continue to face growing wildfire risks:
Canada’s aerial firefighting system is too slow, and front-line communities are paying the price
Buying more planes will not help Canada tackle wildfires if there is not a thought-out plan for their use well ahead of a fire.

🎓Our recent graduate, Chantal Roby, returned to SCS after almost two decades to complete a Certificate of Proficiency in English for Professional Communication, which she had once set aside. Along the way, she strengthened not only her English-language skills but also her confidence and sense of purpose.
Her dedication and hard work led to a remarkable achievement: Chantal’s outstanding academic performance earned her the Edward C. Webster Prize in English as a Second Language, awarded annually to the student with the highest standing in this program.
👏 Congratulations, Chantal, on this well-deserved accomplishment!
