Pioneering the Future of Cardiac Imaging: A Decade of Discovery

For nearly ten years, the Cardiovascular MR Research Group at the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre has been revolutionizing heart care. Founded in 2015 under the leadership of Dr. Matthias Friedrich, this dynamic team has introduced groundbreaking CMR (cardiovascular magnetic resonance) techniques—most notably, oxygenation-sensitive CMR (OS-CMR)—to transform cardiac diagnostics.

Key contributors include Dr. Judy Luu, whose breathing-enhanced OS-CMR research is shedding new light on blood vessel function in both the brain and heart, and Dr. Michael Chetrit, who’s leveraging AI-driven algorithms for more accurate myocardial tissue analysis.

By partnering with national and international institutions, the group ensures that these innovative methods reach patients everywhere—furthering their mission to make advanced imaging accessible, even in low- and middle-income settings. Their work is also supported by the multidisciplinary Cardiovascular Health Across the Lifespan Program, bridging research from basic science to global health solutions.

Join us in celebrating nearly a decade of discovery as we look forward to the next era of breakthroughs in cardiovascular imaging!

🫀 Breaking New Ground in Cardiac Imaging Research

Our team is working on revolutionary ways to detect Chagas disease - a condition that starts with a bug bite but can lead to serious heart complications decades later. Using advanced Cardiac MRI techniques, we're developing new markers to identify this condition earlier and improve patient outcomes.

Did you know?
- 6-8 million people worldwide are affected
- The disease can remain "silent" for up to 20 years
- 30-40% of patients develop cardiac complications
- Early detection is crucial for better outcomes
