To welcome the delegation from Mexico, Algora Lab is organizing a series of events, deliberation workshops, talks, and an important Roundtable on the first of February at the Mila, with founders and actors of the Montreal Declaration, in order to share with them the processes that have made it possible to put this Declaration in place and to understand what are the steps to be recommended in order to operationalize it.

Congratulations to Vincent Mai, a researcher at Algora Lab, for his project on and , in which questions such as:
"What opportunities does robotics open up in relation to the SDGs, and what are the best design practices to achieve them? How to minimize the negative impacts of robotic applications? What is the role of public authorities in the regulation, but also the support and use of these technologies?"

In collaboration with the FARI - AI for the Common Good Institute, Vincent Mai is currently building the Sustainable Robotics site, with the aim of bringing together a community of actors interested in working on this ongoing project.

PERFORMATIVE QUANTIFICATION: How to build moral opinions when collecting replies

ABSTRACT
The development of the digital era led to an increasing use of online platforms to collect political and moral judgements for research purpose, to reflect public opinion to inform decision-makers or even to automate decision-making. Critical sociology brought into light the non-neutrality of quantification methods upon which statistical analysis are based while the literature on nudges reminds us of how sensitive people’s judgements are to the questions’ framing. This results in the critical importance to collect responses that accurately reflect people’s opinions, but also, acknowledging the performative effect of the data collection process, to use this latter as a way for respondents to develop informed opinions. In this research, we investigate the impact of six design factors on respondent’s replies to a set of moral dilemmas involving autonomous vehicles. We show how they impact respondents’ replies, completely reversing some of the results claimed by other quantitative research (the Moral Machine Experiment), but also contribute to building more robust, confident and convergent replies through a multi-steps critical reflexive process.

ABOUT SPEAKER
Hubert Etienne is a philosopher who is completing his PhD in AI ethics and computational philosophy at École Normale Supérieure and Meta AI. He is a lecturer in AI ethics à Sciences Po, in data economics at HEC Paris and in digital regulation at the National School of Administration (ENA). He is currently a visiting fellow at Harvard University.
