ZEN MOMENT
Originally, the album had 12 songs and it was supposed to end with the title track, “Together” However….
In February 2023, my sister announced that she had cancer.
What she didn’t tell us (although we suspected) was that it was terminal.
2 weeks after her announcement, I sat down at the piano (I rarely compose on the piano, the guitar being the instrument I truly master) and wrote this little song for her in about an hour or so, lyrics and all. The title is from her posts on social media. She liked to take pictures of nature around her house and she called those pictures “Zen Moments”.
That song became my birthday present to her which I played for her for the first time on her birthday at the end of July.
In November, things took a turn for the worse. My sister chose assisted su***de as her liver and vital organs were failing. When it became clear the end was coming, I recorded a piano and a guitar version of “Zen Moment” at Hotel2Tango. It was recorded on a Thursday. It was mixed the next day. My girlfriend got the idea to record her voice saying “Zen Moment”. We added her voice to the song on Sunday. My sister heard both versions of the song on Monday. She died Wednesday morning, November 29, 2023.
As the doctor gave her the final treatment with the family gathered around, the last thing she heard in this world was this song.

ZEN MOMENT :
À l'origine, l'album devait avoir 12 chansons et devait se terminer par la chanson-titre, "Together" Cependant ....
En février 2023, ma sœur a annoncé qu'elle avait un cancer.
Ce qu'elle ne nous a pas dit (bien que nous nous en doutions), c'est qu'elle était en phase terminale.
2 semaines après son annonce, je me suis assis au piano (je compose rarement au piano, la guitare étant l'instrument que je maîtrise le mieux) et j'ai écrit cette petite chanson pour elle en une heure environ, paroles et tout. Le titre est tiré de ses messages sur les médias sociaux. Elle aimait prendre des photos de la nature autour de sa maison et elle appelait ces photos "Zen Moments".
Cette chanson est devenue mon cadeau d'anniversaire pour elle, que j'ai joué pour la première fois à sa fête, à la fin du mois de juillet.
En novembre, les choses ont empiré. Ma sœur a opté pour le su***de assisté, car son foie et ses organes vitaux étaient défaillants. Lorsqu'il est devenu évident que la fin approchait, j'ai enregistré une version piano et une version guitare de "Zen Moment" au studio Hotel2Tango. L'enregistrement a eu lieu un jeudi. La chanson a été mixée le lendemain. Ma blonde a eu l'idée d'enregistrer sa voix pour dire "Zen Moment". Nous avons ajouté sa voix à la chanson le dimanche. Ma sœur a entendu les deux versions de la chanson le lundi. Elle est décédée le mercredi matin, le 29 novembre 2023.
Alors que le médecin lui administrait le dernier traitement et que la famille était réunie autour d'elle, la dernière chose qu'elle a entendue dans ce monde a été cette chanson.

TOGETHER
Here is the epic. I have a knack to close albums with an epic tune. And this one is epic. It’s a suite of many songs clocking at over 16 minutes. It’s my longest song ever.
Long songs provide the writer with a lot of challenges. The first one is to keep the song interesting. In these days of short attention spans, that is quite the challenge. Another one is that you end up with mixing a lot of tracks.
At one point, I was running 235 tracks of various instruments, vocals and sounds. I trimmed it down to about 80-90 tracks when I handed it to my sound engineer. Let’s just say he earned his money.
I kept the song interesting by making it a suite with very different sections. The tempo changes with every section and so does the time signatures. There are quiet sections and loud sections. There are sax solos, guitar solos and Ebow solos.
However despite these various elements, I’ve kept the atmosphere and feel of the song very consistent.
The words of the song describe the story of a relationship: the thrill of the first encounter, the exploration that goes on when a couple discover each other, the hard times when routine and time erodes the relationship and its passion and then the time when you rediscover your mate. As for the ending… I leave its conclusion up to you.

TOGETHER :
Voici la chanson longue. J'ai le don de clôturer les albums par un morceau épique. Et celle-ci est vraiment épique. C'est une suite de plusieurs chansons qui dure plus de 16 minutes. C'est ma plus longue chanson de ma carrière.
Les longues chansons posent de nombreux défis à l'auteur. Le premier est de maintenir l'intérêt de la chanson. À l'heure où le temps d''attention est de plus en plus limitée, c'est un véritable défi. Un autre défi est que l'on se retrouve à mixer un grand nombre de pistes.
À un moment donné, j'avais 235 tracks d'instruments, de voix et de sons divers. J'ai réduit le nombre de pistes à 80-90 lorsque j'ai confié le tout à mon ingénieur de son. Disons qu'il a mérité son argent.
J'ai gardé la chanson intéressante en en faisant une suite avec des sections très différentes. Le tempo change à chaque section, de même que les signatures temporelles. Il y a des sections calmes et des sections fortes. Il y a des solos de saxophone, de guitare et d'E-bow.
Cependant, malgré ces différents éléments, j'ai gardé l'atmosphère et le sentiment de la chanson très cohérents.
Les paroles de la chanson décrivent l'histoire d'une relation : le frisson de la première rencontre, l'exploration qui a lieu lorsqu'un couple se découvre l'un l'autre, les moments difficiles où la routine et le temps érodent la relation et sa passion, puis le moment où l'on redécouvre son compagnon. En ce qui concerne la fin .. je vous laisse l'opportunité de tirer votre propre conclusion.

MEET SHAE MARC-ANTOINE JOLY :
Last week, I talked about Shae Brossard. Now, meet the other sound engineer who did the mix for the other half of the album. Marc-Antoine Joly works at Planet Studios. I had never worked with Marc-Antoine before. I discovered him as we worked on the album. Actually, he was on his own trying to untangle the numerous tracks . He worked on the 16 minute epic title track (More on that song tomorrow). Planet studios is very different than Hotel2Tango. Planet is a more classical studio and more mainstream. Among the many artists who had sessiosn there were Prince, Rihanna and Thom Yorke of Radiohead fame. I also recorded most of the vocals at Planet with Marc-Antoine as the session engineer. All were great sessions. Marc-Antoine also did the mastering of the album. The blend of the 2 engineers turned out to be a success in the making of this album. Thank you very much.

JE VOUS PRÉSENTE MARC-ANTOINE JOLY :
La semaine dernière, j'ai parlé de Shae Brossard. Maintenant, je vous présente l'autre ingénieur de son qui a réalisé le mixage de l'autre moitié de l'album. Marc-Antoine Joly travaille aux Planet Studios. Je n'avais jamais travaillé avec Marc-Antoine auparavant. Je l'ai découvert au fur et à mesure que nous travaillions sur l'album. En fait, il était tout seul à essayer de démêler les nombreuses pistes. Il a travaillé sur la chanson-titre de l'album épique de 16 minutes (plus d'informations sur cette chanson demain). Planet studios est très différent de Hotel2Tango. Planet est un studio plus classique et plus conventionnel. Parmi les nombreux artistes qui y ont participé, citons Prince, Rihanna et Thom Yorke de Radiohead. J'ai également enregistré la plupart des voix à Planet avec Marc-Antoine comme ingénieur de session. Toutes ces sessions ont été excellentes. Marc-Antoine a également fait le mastering de l'album. Le mélange des deux ingénieurs s'est avéré être un succès dans la réalisation de cet album. Merci beaucoup.

WHISPERINGS
“Whisperings” was a quiet instrumental. It was a fine little tune. I thought I was pretty much done but then, I thought it missed something to make it stand out. A little bit of spice. Something to make it special. I’m not sure when or how come I came up with the solution but it seemed obvious now thinking at the title: A woman’s voice whispering. I immediately thought of something in Italian. I remember playing that song to my grandmother years ago. My mother’s side of the family is Italian. I immediately thought of Daniela Fiorentino, who I met when she was a DJ for a show on the local Italian radio station in Montreal. As it turned out, she is a classically trained singer and she sings Italian songs.
So I asked her to whisper sweet nothings in Italian with her beautiful sexy voice. She wrote a text that was full of love and passion. This song is the result. Let those sweet whisperings send you away to the Land of Love and Dreams.

«Whisperings» est une petite instrumentale calme. C'était une belle chanson. Je pensais que j'avais à peu près terminé, mais je me suis dit qu'il lui manquait quelque chose pour se démarquer. Un peu de piquant. Quelque chose qui pourrait rendre cette chanson spéciale. Je ne sais pas exactement quand ni comment j'ai trouvé la solution, mais elle me semble évidente maintenant que je pense au titre : Une voix de femme qui chuchote. J'ai immédiatement pensé à quelque chose en italien. Je me souviens avoir joué cette chanson à ma grand-mère il y a des années. Le côté maternel de ma famille est italien. J'ai immédiatement pensé à Daniela Fiorentino, que j'ai rencontrée lorsqu'elle était DJ pour une émission sur la station de radio italienne locale à Montréal. Elle a reçu une formation classique de chanteuse et elle interprète des chansons italiennes.
Je lui ai donc demandé de chuchoter des mots doux en italien avec sa belle voix sexy. Elle a écrit un texte plein d'amour et de passion. Cette chanson en est le résultat. Laissez-vous emporter par ces doux murmures au pays de l'amour et des rêves.

PEACE
After war, do we get peace ? I like this song for its lyrics where I try to raise my inner Leonard Cohen. I also like it for its weird middle section where I told my saxophone Goddess, Beth McKenna, to give it her all. I also like the sounds of my guitars and Ebows at they clash with each other, I also like that the song is in 6/8 time. It’s rock, it’s jazz, it’s proggy and anything you can think.

Après la guerre, obtiendra-t-on la paix ? J'aime cette chanson pour ses paroles où je me prends pour Leonard Cohen. Je l'aime aussi pour sa section centrale étrange où j'ai dit à ma déesse du saxophone, Beth McKenna, de donner tout ce qu'elle a. J'aime aussi les sons de mes guitares et de mes Ebows qui s'entrechoquent, j'aime aussi que la chanson soit en 6/8. C’est du rock, c’est du jazz, c’est du prog et tout en même temps.

In this song, I’m being really cheeky. I replaced all the F bombs in that famous four-letter word for the letter B. Is that still considered “explicit lyrics” ?
This song is an angry song as you can easily guess. I wrote this at the end of the pandemic. I was tired of everything and everyone. It’s my “Go to Hell” song with heavy guitars, punk attitude and lots of blood, sweat and tears. In this song, I attack governments, religions, dictators, conspiracy theorists, people on the right AND the left, pandemics, mainstream media AND alternate media and nonsense like resets, crop circles, flat earthers, Trump supporters, wokes and so on. It’s 3 minutes of mayhem. Buck the system !!

Dans cette chanson, je suis vraiment baveux. J'ai remplacé tous les F de ce célèbre mot de quatre lettres par la lettre B. Est-ce encore considéré comme des "paroles explicites"?
Cette chanson est une chanson de colère, comme vous pouvez facilement le deviner. Je l'ai écrite à la fin de la pandémie. J'en avais assez de tout et de tout le monde. C'est ma chanson "Allez tous c***r en enfer" avec des guitares heavy, une attitude punk et beaucoup de sang, de sueur et de larmes. Dans cette chanson, j'attaque les gouvernements, les religions, les dictateurs, les théoriciens de la conspiration, les gens de droite ET de gauche, les pandémies, les médias traditionnels et les médias alternatifs, ainsi que des absurdités comme les resets, les crop circles, les fans de la Terre qui est plate, les partisans de Trump, les wokes, etc. C'est 3 minutes de chaos. Buck le système !!!

AS LONG AS WE’RE TOGETHER
“As Long As We’re Together” is two songs in one. The first is an uplifting song about solidarity among people. The second part which is the long middle section is an ambient instrumental that alternates between a major and a minor key.
Although it’s a long song that some people would be inclined to edit, I prefer songs that take time to breathe. Too often, songs fall in that 3 to 4 minute format and while that length of time is considered optimal, there are times when songs should develop slowly in order to consolidate the feelings and the ambience it needs to convey. Think of it as an audio equivalent of the “slow food movement”.

“As Long As We’re Together”est deux chansons en une. La première est une chanson entraînante sur la solidarité entre les gens. La seconde partie, qui est la longue section centrale, est un instrumental ambiant qui alterne entre une tonalité majeure et une tonalité mineure.
Bien qu'il s'agisse d'une longue chanson que certains seraient enclins à éditer, je préfère les chansons qui prennent le temps de respirer. Trop souvent, les chansons tombent dans le format de 3 à 4 minutes et bien que cette durée soit considérée comme optimale, il y a des moments où les chansons doivent se développer lentement afin de consolider les sentiments et l'ambiance qu'elles doivent transmettre. Il s'agit de l'équivalent audio du mouvement "slow food".

Beyond the casualties that the pandemic caused, another adverse effect was its effect on people’s psyche. Of course, conspiracy theories, differences of opinions existed before the pandemic but it just seems that the isolation caused people to lose perspective on reality. It’s quite all right to have different opinions but now we have been conditioned to believe that our opinions are absolute truths. This song is about the fact that while we may have enlightened perspectives at times, no one knows the ”truth” Or at the very least, no one knows the entire truth." Like in Einstein's theory of relativity, time is relative. So is truth. It can be different from the point of view of different observers. Arguing and forcing your opinion when no one knows the right answer is futile. It’s like a conflict someone who believes in God and an atheist. No one can win the argument. It's best to conserve our energies to make our world a better place instead.
Musically, this song is a tribute to late 70s bands and artists like Television and Elvis Costello. I was looking for a dry sound with angular rhythms and chords. That's what I was looking for when I arranged this song.

THIS IS IT :
Au-delà des pertes humaines que la pandémie a causées, un autre effet négatif a été son impact sur le psychisme des gens. Bien sûr, les théories du complot et les divergences d'opinion existaient avant la pandémie, mais il semble que l'isolement ait fait perdre aux gens toute perspective sur la réalité. Il est tout à fait normal d'avoir des opinions différentes, mais aujourd'hui, nous avons été conditionnés à croire que nos opinions sont des vérités absolues. Cette chanson parle du fait que, même si nous avons parfois des perspectives éclairées, personne ne connaît la "vérité " ou, à tout le moins, personne ne connaît l'entièreté de la vérité. Comme dans la théorie de la relativité d'Einstein, le temps est relatif. Il en va de même pour la vérité. Elle peut être différente du point de vue de différents observateurs. Il est vain d'argumenter et d'imposer son opinion lorsque personne ne connaît la bonne réponse. C'est comme un conflit entre quelqu'un qui croit en Dieu et un athée. Personne ne peut gagner l'argument. Il vaut mieux conserver notre énergie pour rendre notre monde meilleur.
Musicalement, cette chanson est un hommage aux groupes et artistes de la fin des années 70 comme Television et Elvis Costello. Je cherchais un son sec avec des rythmes et des accords anguleux. C'est ce que je recherchais lorsque j'ai arrangé cette chanson.
