At Strategic Learning Clinic, instead of traditional, content-based tutoring, we offer a unique teaching approach designed to get to the root of the problem. Our specialized programs, many of which are not available anywhere else in Montreal, are effective because they are based on the most current research about how students learn. These specialized programs include both cognitive training and academic remedial programs. Our cognitive training programs are designed to improve language and listening ability, reading and comprehension, attention and focus, and problem-solving skills. Academic remedial programs are designed to improve reading, writing, study skills and math. Students can also receive teaching to improve their marks in subject area content. All of these programs are also unique in the way they are delivered – by experienced teachers and clinicians who work one-on-one with our students at their own pace. This approach repeatedly gets results, even when other methods have failed. Our programs, most of which are available in English and French, are for students of all ages.

Today is World Teachers' Day. 💛

And we want to use it to talk about a very specific kind of teacher.

Not the one who moved through the curriculum fastest. Not the one whose class averaged the highest grades.

The one who noticed.

Who looked at the child who had gone quiet, who had stopped raising their hand, who faked stomach aches on Monday mornings, who handed in half-finished work not because they didn't care but because something wasn't connecting, and instead of moving on said:

'Let me try something different.'

That teacher didn't just teach a subject.

They gave a child back their belief in themselves.

Back to school means new teachers.

And new teachers who don't know your child yet.

Who will see a blank page and assume there was nothing to write. Who will see an unfinished essay and think the effort wasn't there. Who will read a paragraph full of spelling errors and underestimate the mind behind it.

So before September gets away from us, here is what we want every teacher to know about the children who struggle with writing.

The ideas are there.

Almost always, the ideas are extraordinary. Rich, detailed, creative, complex. The kind of thinking that comes out in conversation and leaves you genuinely impressed.

But writing is not simply thinking put on paper. It is a multi-step neurological process that requires managing ideas, sentence structure, spelling, punctuation and the physical act of writing, all simultaneously, all under time pressure, all while managing the anxiety of being judged on something permanent.

For children with dyslexia, dysgraphia, ADHD or executive function challenges, one or several of those steps breaks down every time they try.

The blank page is not evidence of an empty mind.

It is evidence of a child working harder than you can see, and not yet having the tools to show you what they know.

What they need is not more time on the same task that isn't working.

They need explicit, structured writing instruction that builds the bridge between what is in their head and what can get onto the page.

Every family that walks through our door comes with the same feeling.

Her teacher says she's a great reader.

And she is.

Every word. Correct. Fluent. The kind of reading that makes a teacher smile and move on.

But ask her what the chapter was about, and she looks at you with eyes that are genuinely trying, and has nothing.

Not because she wasn't paying attention.
Not because she doesn't care.
Not because she isn't bright.

But because somewhere between the words leaving the page and meaning forming in her mind, the connection simply isn't there.

This is not a reading problem.

It is a comprehension problem.

And they are two completely different things that require two completely different solutions.

Reading - decoding written symbols into words, is one skill. Comprehension - turning those words into meaning, building a mental picture of what is happening, following a story or an argument as it unfolds, is another skill entirely.

And it is one that is almost never explicitly taught.

Because schools assume that a child who can decode fluently can also comprehend. For most children that assumption is correct. For some, it is the assumption that costs them years.

Visualizing and Verbalizing® teaches the brain to do what it was never shown how to do.

To build a mental image while reading. To see the castle. To picture the elephant. To watch the rocket launch, not just read the word rocket, and hold that image in mind as the next sentence arrives and adds to it.

Meaning becomes visible.

Comprehension becomes possible.

And the child who has been sitting in classrooms for years reading every word perfectly and understanding almost none of it, finally experiences what reading was supposed to feel like all along.
