📚 Is your child struggling with school avoidance or refusal?

Anglophone East School District is offering a free 6-week virtual parent education group for parents and caregivers of students in Kindergarten to Grade 5 who regularly refuse or avoid going to school, frequently stay home due to anxiety or illness, or experience chronic absenteeism.

Based on the SPACE model (Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions), the program will help parents and caregivers better understand the cycle of school avoidance, respond effectively to anxiety and school refusal, and support their child in taking brave steps back to school. 💛

🧡 Today, we were honoured to attend a cultural showcase at Salisbury Elementary School, where students had the opportunity to learn about Mi’kmaq culture through dance, regalia, history and teachings from members of the Indigenous Education Team.

Students and staff were invited to participate in some of the dances, making the experience even more meaningful and memorable. We are grateful to the dancers and knowledge sharers who spent time with the school community today and shared their culture, traditions and stories.

A reminder that all AESD schools are closed tomorrow, September 30, in recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

This day is an opportunity to acknowledge the atrocities committed through the residential school system, honour the experiences of Survivors and those who never returned home, and continue learning about the histories, cultures and contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples.

🧡 September 30 is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day.

All Anglophone East School District schools will be closed on Wednesday, September 30, as we honour the children who never returned home from residential schools, Survivors, their families and communities.

Tomorrow, Tuesday, September 29, we encourage students and staff across our district to wear orange as an acknowledgement of the atrocities committed through the residential school system and to honour the experiences and voices of Survivors.

Orange Shirt Day grew from the story of residential school Survivor Phyllis Webstad. In 1973, when Phyllis was six years old, she arrived at St. Joseph Mission Residential School wearing a new orange shirt that her grandmother had bought for her. The shirt was taken from her on her first day and never returned. Phyllis later shared her story, which helped inspire what has become a national movement for truth and reconciliation.

We encourage families to take time to learn together, listen to the voices of Survivors and continue conversations about the history and ongoing legacy of residential schools.

🏫 Exciting news for Anglophone East and the Town of Salisbury! 🎉

Today marks an important step forward for the Salisbury community, with the announcement that land has been secured for the new K–5 Salisbury Elementary School.

The new school, scheduled to open in September 2029, will provide a modern, welcoming learning environment designed to meet the needs of students and families in this growing community.

For Anglophone East School District, this is an exciting investment in our students, our staff and the future of Salisbury. We are thrilled to see this project moving forward and look forward to working alongside our provincial and community partners as the new school takes shape.
