The number rods are a child’s first introduction to quantity (for numbers 1 - 10) in a Montessori classroom.
The material itself is a materialized abstraction of quantity and is directly prepared for with the red rods in the sensorial area, where the ‘unit of measure’ being the shortest red rod, becomes the ‘unit’ - one.
This is one of many examples of direct preparation in the Montessori classroom - as each previous area builds and prepares for what is to come.
A child’s experience with the number rods comes as concrete exploration, where the concept of ‘quantity as a single entity’ is shown. It is here where a child gains understanding of what is ‘3’ and what is ‘9’. Hands on learning and exploration is so important to a child as they work to construct themselves, classify, and gain order.
Pictured here ➡️ is the number rods and cards, which comes after ample experience with the number rods and sandpaper numerals.

Learning should be fun, which is why Montessori materials are presented in such a way to inspire the child, they are beautiful to attract the child, and they are often ‘games’ with concrete materials that can be social in nature.
This child was working with colour box 3 when these beautiful peonies were brought inside from our garden, she wanted to see exactly which colours they were!
The senatorial materials offer a lot of memory games to be played that refine a child’s sensory perception and are just plain fun!

A child refines their senses with repetition of concrete materials and time! Making mistakes are part of this process as a child works to perceive their own errors and correct them (with repeated activity) to become more precise.
Pictured above (and as you swipe across) is colour box 3, which has children grade individual colours from darkest to lightest. As you might have guessed- this activity refines a child’s visual sense of colour! 💜❤️🧡💛💚💙🖤🤍
Swipe ➡️ to see a child working with Colour box 3! If you can see some colour tablets out of order- that’s perfectly fine! It means that a child is refining their visual perception. An important note to make: It’s in the mistakes that a child learns 🤗
New post forthcoming on games to play with the colour box that keeps it exciting, interesting, and challenging. Any comments to questions? Let us know below!

Practical Life skills allow a child to develop themselves and their coordination through hands-on activities and movement.
This child is spooning from one bowl to another- something that requires concentration, hand-eye coordination, and fine motor skills. Using a spoon is a that a child builds to gain independence, so they can do for themselves! Swipe ➡️ to see the whole process.

Building words using the moveable alphabet allows a child take the sounds of letters and construct words, communicating vocabulary that they understand, using a form symbolic representation. This allows a child to write before they read!
Reading comes when children start blending the sounds of the letters, giving us the words we know.
This child started spontaneously blending thr letters, reading for thr first time on his own!! Swipe ➡️ to see his elated reaction to his accomplishment, as he told the teacher “I’m reading now!” 💛💙💛

The dressing frames are part of the Practical Life Area of the Montessori classroom, focusing on their ‘care of self’. This area of the class provides the environment for a child to develop functional independence and many other essential life skills! (See below!)
Swipe ➡️ to see the unzipping of the Zipper Frame!
How can dressing frames develop so much and how can this benefit your child?
-these frames isolate a skill (from snaps, to zips, lacing, and buckles etc. )
-these frames provide the repetition needed for a child to master a specific skill
- when these same fasteners appear on your child’s clothing, they can practise on their own items (with guidance when required)
-as a child develops proficiency in caring for themselves (such as dressing themselves) they develop more independence.
