Did You Know: Grapes can create plasma in a microwave? 🍇⚡
It might sound unbelievable, but placing grapes in a microwave can create a burst of plasma—a superheated, electrically charged gas. When two grape halves are close together, microwave energy becomes concentrated between them, causing the minerals and water inside the grapes to generate a glowing plasma.
While it's a fascinating demonstration of microwave physics, it's definitely not something to try at home. It can damage your microwave and poses a fire risk.
At The Culinary Arts School of Ontario, students learn not only professional cooking techniques but also the science behind food. Understanding how heat, moisture, and chemistry affect ingredients helps chefs make better decisions in the kitchen and create consistently exceptional dishes.

Risotto should be stirred with attention, not panic.
Correct answer: C : often, taking breaks in between.
Stirring helps release starch from the rice, which is what gives risotto its creamy texture without needing cream.
But constant stirring can make the rice overly soft or gluey. Not stirring enough can cause the rice to cook unevenly or stick to the bottom of the pan.
The goal is steady movement: add warm stock gradually, stir often, and give the rice short breaks so it can absorb liquid while still keeping its shape.
Good risotto is creamy, loose, and tender, not mushy.

Chimichanga is often translated as “thingamajig,” but the story is a little messier than that.
The word is believed to come from Mexican Spanish, where chimichanga or chivichanga can refer to a small trinket, trifle, or unimportant thing. In English, “thingamajig” is a close playful equivalent.
The dish itself is basically a deep-fried burrito, usually filled with ingredients like beans, rice, cheese, shredded meat, and spices. Its exact origin is debated, but two Arizona restaurants are often connected to the story: El Charro Café in Tucson and Macayo’s in Phoenix.
One popular legend says the name came from a cook who nearly swore after dropping a burrito into hot oil, then softened the word into “chimichanga.”
So yes, the name is fun, but the history is part language, part accident, and part Southwestern food culture.

Chilling cookie dough does more than make it easier to handle.
Correct answer: C : make the cookie taste better.
As cookie dough rests in the fridge, the flour has more time to hydrate and the ingredients have more time to settle together. This can create a deeper flavour, better texture, and a more balanced cookie once baked.
Chilling also firms up the fat in the dough. That means the cookies usually spread less in the oven, giving you a thicker cookie with better shape.
So while chilling can help prevent spreading, the biggest reason for an overnight rest is flavour development.

Blueberries have a built-in star.
At the blossom end of each berry, you will find a small five-pointed shape. That is why blueberries have been called “star berries.”
The shape comes from the calyx, the flower structure that stays attached as the fruit grows. It is a small botanical detail, but it tells a bigger story about how closely people observed the foods around them.
Before blueberries were cultivated commercially, wild blueberries were an important food for Indigenous peoples across North America. They could be eaten fresh, dried for winter, or used in cooked dishes.
Food facts are not just trivia. They are history, botany, and culture in one bite.

Panzanella is a classic example of turning leftover bread into something delicious.
Correct answer: A : bread and tomatoes.
Panzanella is a traditional Tuscan salad built around stale bread and ripe tomatoes.
The bread is not just a garnish, it is the foundation of the dish. Traditionally, older bread was soaked or softened, then tossed with juicy tomatoes, olive oil, vinegar, onions, basil, and seasoning. As it sits, the bread absorbs the tomato juices and dressing, turning simple leftover ingredients into a full, flavourful salad.
That is the real beauty of panzanella: it comes from cucina povera, the Italian tradition of making excellent food from humble ingredients and wasting as little as possible.

The Yubari King cantaloupe is not your average melon.
It is grown only in Yubari, a small city in Hokkaido, Japan, where the climate, volcanic soil, and careful greenhouse cultivation help produce its signature sweetness and aroma.
What makes it so expensive is not just flavour. Yubari melons are judged on appearance, symmetry, rind pattern, stem shape, fragrance, and sugar content. The most flawless pairs are sold at seasonal auctions, where businesses often buy them as luxury gifts or publicity pieces.
In 2019, a pair sold for ¥5 million, roughly $45,000 USD at the time. So while the graphic says $27,295, some auction records have gone even higher.
