Movement isn’t a break from learning. It’s part of learning.

For many neurodivergent learners, opportunities to move throughout the day can help support attention, self-regulation, coordination, and confidence. Purposeful movement gives students a chance to reset so they’re better prepared to engage in the next learning activity.

At Oakwood Academy, we understand that every child learns differently, and movement is one of the many ways we help students thrive.

There is no better classroom than the world around us.

Our Oakwood Academy summer campers put curiosity into action with a visit to MiMuseum - Museum of Magic and Illusions , exploring interactive exhibits that challenged their perception, encouraged problem-solving, and sparked plenty of laughter. The day continued at the library, where campers slowed things down with stories, discovery, and a love of reading.

Every field trip is another opportunity to build confidence, explore new environments, and create meaningful experiences together.

Learning starts long before a child sits down in the classroom.

Sleep, nutrition, movement, emotional wellbeing, and feeling safe all play a role in how children are able to focus, engage, and learn. When we support the whole child, we create stronger opportunities for growth.

What do you think has the biggest impact on a child’s ability to learn?

Every child has strengths worth celebrating.

When children have opportunities to build on what they do well, it can help increase confidence, motivation, and their willingness to take on new challenges.

Sometimes growth begins by recognizing what’s already there.

A summer treat can be more than just a way to cool down.

At Oakwood Academy Summer Camp, sharing ice cream on a warm day gave students another opportunity to connect with peers, practise social communication, and enjoy a fun moment together. Experiences like these help build friendships, confidence, and a strong sense of belonging throughout the summer.

Helping around the house is about more than getting chores done.

Simple responsibilities can give children opportunities to build confidence, develop independence, and feel like a valued part of the family.

Those everyday moments often teach lessons that last well beyond childhood.

Play doesn’t have to look the same for every child.

What matters most is that children have opportunities to explore, connect, and enjoy experiences in ways that feel meaningful to them. Supporting their individual interests can help build confidence, curiosity, and connection over time.

Does your child prefer imaginative play or hands on activities?
