Get to know the people at the FLC

Today we’re learning more about Melek.

Melek is a fourth-year student majoring in Economics with a minor in Chemistry and Biology. She first discovered the FLC through her friends during her first year. They introduced her to the space in the KN basement, highlighting it as a great spot with high-quality computers and comfortable chairs for studying and hanging out. Melek officially joined the FLC team in Fall 2025.

The FLC is a space that thrives on community and connection. Melek particularly enjoys her time at the FLC because she has the opportunity to meet and interact with new students. She loves getting to know what other students are studying and building meaningful connections within the UTM community.

What’s Melek’s advice to incoming UTM students? “Get involved in clubs and extracurricular activities”. She believes that some of the best opportunities come from joining organizations and meeting others outside of the classroom.

What’s next for Melek? She plans to work over the summer to gain experience across different fields. Looking further ahead, she hopes to pursue a Doctor of Pharmacy at the University of Toronto. The FLC wishes Melek all the best on her journey!

Get to know the people at the FLC

Today we’re learning more about Areeb.

Areeb is a fourth-year student in the B.Comm Accounting program. He first discovered the FLC through friends who told him about a “hidden study spot” underneath the KN Rotunda. After becoming a regular visitor because of the calming atmosphere and helpful resources, he joined the team for the 2023–24 school year and returned in Fall 2025 following a year of leave.

The FLC is a space that continuously evolves to support student success. Areeb particularly enjoys his time at the FLC because it allows him to learn about the wide variety of resources available. He finds it rewarding to see the library integrate new certifications and guides—especially those involving advancements in AI—to ensure students are equipped with necessary modern skills.

What’s Areeb’s advice to incoming UTM students? “Step out of your comfort zone”. Reflecting on his own journey from being an introverted student, he encourages others to attend events and talk to their peers, noting that these interactions are how he cultivated a strong friend group and gained personal confidence.

What’s next for Areeb? He plans to pursue his CPA designation and work in public accounting after graduation. Before diving into his career, he hopes to travel across Canada on the VIA Rail, with plans to visit Ottawa and Western Canada. The FLC wishes Areeb all the best on his journey!

Get to know the people at the FLC

Today we’re learning more about Katelyn.

Katelyn is a fourth-year student pursuing a BCom as an Accounting Specialist and Economics Major. She first learned about the FLC through UTM LAUNCH during her first year and officially joined the team in September 2024 after applying through CLNx.

The FLC is a space dedicated to helping students develop new skills and expand their knowledge through specialized resources and certifications. Katelyn particularly enjoys her time at the FLC because she has the opportunity to help students find the specific resources they need for their courses and promote certifications that allow them to grow professionally.

What’s Katelyn’s advice to incoming UTM students? “Take advantage of all the resources and services UTM offers”. She encourages all students to complete free certifications through the FLC, join clubs, attend workshops, and get involved on campus to make new friends.

What’s next for Katelyn? She plans to work over the summer and take some time to explore new hobbies. She remains open to new opportunities and may consider pursuing further studies in the future. The FLC wishes Katelyn all the best on her journey!
