CARE is dedicated to providing Remedial Educational services Providing at home and in school Orton-Gillingham services, assessments and teacher training.

October is Dyslexia Awareness Month! This is the simplest definition I’ve heard that sums up something very complex! I first heard it years ago from @pdxreadingspecialist . She has the best trainings (online and in person).

Do you have students who are bright and hard working, but reading seems to be such a challenge? There could be a reason why. Teachers can’t diagnose dyslexia, but we can identify students who are at risk. Having a dyslexia screener (like DIBELS or Acadience) is a great first step.

I know every teacher is super busy and overworked. Taking time to read a book or participating in a workshop on dyslexia may not be something you can do at the moment. I definitely understand that! So I hope to give little snippets of information about dyslexia. Swipe to learn more.

When you do have the time, I encourage you to learn more. Once you start learning about dyslexia, you will start to see if everywhere. According to the International Dyslexia Association, about 15-20% of people have some symptoms of dyslexia. This means you DO likely have students in your classroom with dyslexia. For more information, visit @dyslexiaida ‘s website.

You can also search for your local Decoding Dyslexia group. @dd.or is the Oregon group and they’ve done some amazing things!

Did you ever think you'd be teaching cursive online? We didn't either! Mahjabeen created interactive and animated slides on Google to teach cursive and they work marvelously.

The transition from in person sessions to online zoom ones was tough on our kiddos... However, our students are little champs and their creativity shines through. This is the work of one of our students using Google slides. He was incredibly resistant to writing and would shut down when asked to write a simple sentence. When he saw the colourful interactive slides we had created for our lessons online, he got inspired and decided to write a story with illustrations as a surprise for his O-G practitioner. What a wonderful and creative job he's done!

We cannot stress this enough! Early intervention is essential in ensuring students catch up to grade level. We have seen countless times where schools make parents wait till the end of grade 3 to get assessed or they recommend discontinuing remediation the minute the student shows some progress. Don't waste time hoping the student will grow out of Dyslexia. Don't wait till grade 3/4. Orton-Gillingham intervention is an aggressive structured approach that requires long term commitment to show optimal results. Although it's never too late to start intervention, the longer the delay, the larger the gap to close to reach grade level. Often behavioral and self esteem issues will be observed in these students due to the experience of repeated failure and feeling 'dumb'. Get your child tested, research for evidence based approaches and start intervention early.

Time is precious and finite.

Research indicates that best time to intervene is before Grade 2: there is no time to waste including 1 year or more on ineffective/less-than-optimal reading intervention.

For your child’s reading skills gap, the purpose of reading intervention, always, is to close the gap; that is to move toward grade-level reading.

It is NEVER too late for evidence-based reading intervention.

If not provided within your child's IEP, request your child’s reading assessment data as well as the grade-level norms. Where are they in comparison with grade-level peers?

The year-over-year reading data and goals on the IPRC IEP should indicate that the reading gap is closing.
