Northstar Achievers

Huge congratulations to Rohan and the U11 Rapids! 🏆 After a tough start to the tournament, the team showed incredible resilience to bounce back and claim the championship at the Ontario Cricket Academy’s Under-11 competition on March 29.

The final came down to a nail-biting finish! With the opposition needing 7 runs in the final over, Rohan was trusted with the ball. Under immense pressure, he showed fantastic composure, conceding only 2 runs and taking a crucial wicket to seal the victory. 🏏

This was also Rohan's first competitive experience playing with a leather ball—a huge milestone in his cricket journey. Beyond the trophy, he walked away with lessons in teamwork, perseverance, and the power of never giving up.

Well done, Rohan and the Rapids! 🎉

The month of April began with the Easter long weekend, celebrated memorably with family and friends. International Day will also be happening this month; families will be invited into the school on April 24 for a day of culture and community building. We encourage you to visit as many classrooms as you can to watch the performances and see the projects that the students have put together. A schedule has been included in this newsletter.

Concrete Data for the Absorbent Mind

It is futile to explain abstract concepts like "dimension," "heavy," or "rough" to a toddler. Their "Absorbent Mind" cannot process linguistic abstractions yet; it needs concrete, physical evidence. This is why our classrooms eschew bright, plastic, noisy toys in favor of natural materials—wood, metal, fabric, water. Before a child can ever understand mathematics computationally, they must first feel the physical reality of it. Holding a small wooden cube versus a large one provides the sensory foundation for understanding volume later in life. We are giving them the concrete data their brains are desperate to categorize. We aren't teaching them about the world; we are letting them physically handle it.

Did you Know?

Dr. Montessori was the first woman to graduate from the University of Rome with a Doctor of Medicine degree. She was well-known as one of the brightest students in her class and earned the respect of her peers because of her dedication to her studies. She received multiple scholarships to attend the university, and graduated in 1896 to become one of the first female doctors in Italy. Because of this, she was famous throughout the country for challenging gender stereotypes.

The Architecture of Attention

Modern childhood is a series of constant interruptions, yet we wonder why "attention spans" are shrinking. Conventional education often breaks the day into 20-minute fragments, shattering a child's ability to achieve "Flow." The Montessori Three-Hour Work Cycle is an intentional rejection of this fragmented model. When a child chooses a complex task—perhaps the Golden Beads for decimal work—and is allowed to persist until they reach a state of internal satisfaction, they are practicing deep work. This sustained concentration is the physical manifestation of executive function. It is the ability to ignore distractions and follow a logical sequence to its conclusion. In our classrooms, silence isn't forced; it is the natural byproduct of children who have finally been given the time to truly think.

Discipline as an Internal Achievement

True discipline is not something that can be imposed from the outside; it must be constructed from within. Traditional schooling relies on a system of external rewards and punishments—gold stars and "time-outs"—which actually undermines the development of the prefrontal cortex. In Montessori, we replace external control with "freedom within limits." A child is free to choose their work, but they are not free to disturb the work of others. This nuance requires the child to constantly exercise "inhibitory control." They must manage their impulses not because an adult is watching, but because the community and the work demand it. When you see a room full of focused, quiet children, you aren't seeing "obedience"; you are seeing the hard-won victory of self-regulation.
