Breakdown of the IELTS Test Components
Listening
The Listening test lasts about 30 minutes and requires you to listen to four recordings of native English speakers and then write your answers to a series of questions. It's designed to evaluate your understanding of main ideas, specific factual information, and the ability to follow the development of an argument.
Reading
The Reading component spans 60 minutes, comprising three sections with different reading tasks. While the Academic version includes texts from books, journals, magazines, and newspapers, the General Training version includes extracts from books, magazines, newspapers, notices, advertisements, and company handbooks.
Writing
Also lasting 60 minutes, the Writing test consists of two tasks:
- Task 1 (Academic): Describes visual information, and candidates must summarize or explain data from charts, graphs, or diagrams.
- Task 1 (General Training): Requires writing a letter, either to request information or to explain a situation.
- Task 2 (Both Versions): Requires writing an essay responding to a point of view, argument, or problem.
Speaking
The Speaking test takes between 11 to 14 minutes. It’s a face-to-face interview, divided into three parts: an introduction/interview, a long turn where you speak about a particular topic, and a two-way discussion.
