Love of Language

Love of Language LOL is an enhancement program designed to promote language skills that exceed the standard curriculum

The Love of Language program has been developed to create a strong foundation of literacy upon which students will continuously build throughout their academic careers. With targeted curriculum designed to support student learning, while simultaneously evoking passion and love for the English language, our program is intended to strike a balance between supplementing foundational aspects of literacy, and adding advanced approaches to innovative thinking. Our goal is to provide your child with an outlet to hone the elemental skills related to reading and writing necessary to thrive in both oral and written communication, as well as with an opportunity to work with concepts and skills essential to knowledge development, that are unavailable through standardized curriculum. LOL is committed to working collaboratively with students in the classroom to enhance academic, professional, and personal growth & development. The aim of this program is to extend intellectual boundaries by providing students with a setting to share new and innovative forms of thought, and teach them ways in which to apply these new skills to fundamental proficiencies of literacy. Program Highlights:

· Enhanced Vocabulary Development
· Media Literacy – Current events, critical source analysis, subject-based analytical writing
· Comprehension based reading
· Public Speaking – Speeches & debates
· Early Writing Stages – Brainstorming, outlining, planning, essay topic construction
· Essay Styles – Compare/contrast, cause & effect, expository, persuasive
· Research skills – Finding reliable sources, paraphrasing, avoiding plagiarism
· Citation Styles – MLA & APA bibliographical citation styles
· Writing Styles – Formal essay writing, research/academic writing, news-media writing, and popular writing forms
· Introduction to Poetry – Poetic devices & basic poetry analysis
· Editing & Proofreading
· Additional Skills: Improvised speaking & writing, organizational & time management skills, presentation preparation & communication skills, independent development & team building, exam preparation
