DEMA’s CSR of the Month - December: Human Rights Day. ✊

As Martin Luther once said “A right delayed is a right denied”.

In 1948 a global milestone was achieved; the universal declaration of human rights. Today is a day to remember the importance of human rights.

The United Nations organizes a theme every year for human rights day. This years theme involves EQUALITY. “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights”

2021 is a year to address and find a solution for discrimination that has impacted the most vulnerable: women and girls, indigenous peoples, people of African descent, LGBTI people, migrants and people with disabilities, among others.

We would also like you to take time today to commemorate those who fought and lost their lives for our freedom!❤️✊

Movember: Men’s Mental Health

This month, we want to raise awareness to acknowledge the importance of men’s health and mental health. We hope that men can look after their mental health and be comfortable to seek help when they need them.

As a friend, here are 4 steps to navigate a conversation with those who might be going through:

1. Ask: Start by asking how he’s feeling.
2. Listen: Give him your full attention. Let him know you’re hearing what he’s saying and you’re not judging.
3. Encourage Action: Help him focus on simple things that might improve how he feels. Is he getting enough sleep?
4. Check In: Suggest you catch up soon – in person if you can.

World Mental Health Day 2021

The WHO’s theme for this year is to make mental health care accessible to all.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has had a major impact on people’s mental health. Some groups, including health and other frontline workers, students, people living alone, and those with pre-existing mental health conditions, have been particularly affected.

Yet there is cause for optimism. During the World Health Assembly in May 2021, governments from around the world recognized the need to scale up quality mental health services at all levels.”

The DEM Association acknowledges that as a student, it is a challenge to maintain our wellbeing. We’d also like to remind that there are a number of resources available 🌿

"A mentor can help fill the gaps in your knowledge base, Ms. Ito notes.

She remembers approaching the head of finance at a former workplace in order to learn about that side of the business. Although the individual initially thought they wouldn’t need more than an afternoon to answer Ms. Ito’s questions, their once a month meetings encouraged her to ask more questions and she gained valuable insights she couldn’t have anticipated.”

DEMA'S BUSINESS ARTICLE OF THE WEEK: Instagram adds new teen safety tools as competition with TikTok heats up

“Earlier this year, TikTok made an update to its privacy settings and defaults to further lock down the app for its teenage users. This morning, Instagram followed suit with teen-focused privacy updates of its own. But the Facebook-owned social app didn’t choose to add more privacy to teen accounts by default, as TikTok did — it largely made it more difficult for adults to interact with the app’s teen users.

The company said it’s rolling out new safety features that would restrict adult users from being able to contact teens who didn’t already follow them. The exception to this rule would still allow the teen to interact with adult family members and other trusted adults on the platform, like family friends. In the case that an adult tried to DM a teen who didn’t follow them, they’d receive a notification informing them this wasn’t possible.”
