The Liberal $10/day daycare program didn’t fix childcare, it made an already broken system worse.
Yes, fees have come down for some families. But affordability means nothing if families can’t actually get a space.
Today, waitlists are exploding across Canada. Statistics Canada reports that 31% of parents with children under 5 who are not in care are currently on a waitlist, up from 26% just two years ago. For babies under 1 year old, that number jumps to 56%. (Statistics Canada)
Meanwhile, lower-income and vulnerable families are still being left behind. Indigenous families, newcomers, shift workers, and parents needing flexible care continue to face major barriers accessing licensed spaces. (Child Care Now)
The reality is simple:
A licensed childcare space is a licensed childcare space.
Whether it’s non-profit or privately operated, families need MORE spaces, not political gatekeeping. Refusing to properly fund private licensed operators has reduced access, limited parental choice, and deepened the childcare shortage.
If governments truly want affordable, quality childcare for ALL families, they must fund ALL licensed childcare providers equally and focus on expanding capacity NOW.
Public pressure matters. Politicians only change course when Canadians demand it.

Families deserve affordable childcare.
But they also deserve ACCESS.

When will we learn? Government control doesn’t work!
“For example, the City of Toronto reports that the number of licensed centre-based child-care spaces grew from 78,576 in March 2022—when the Ontario and federal governments signed the CWELCC agreement—to only 85,216 in March 2026. This equates to a compound growth rate of only 2.0 per cent per year, despite a massive inflow of government spending and despite the fact that the child-care sector should have picked up rapidly from lower levels during the pandemic.
Compare this measly 2.0 per cent growth rate to a compound growth rate of 5.1 per cent per year from March 2016 to March 2020, before the pandemic hit. Some simple math: if licensed child-care spaces grew at a 5.1 per cent compound annual growth rate since CWELCC was implemented instead of 2.0 per cent, Toronto would have approximately 10,500 more child-care spaces today.“
