Why are eggs sized differently?

Eggs are sized based on weight to ensure a consistent product when you buy a carton. Though eggs in the same carton may look different in size, they will all fall within a similar weight range.

The weight ranges for eggs are as follows:
Peewee: less than 42 grams
Small: 42-48 grams
Medium: 49-55 grams
Large: 56-62 grams
Extra Large: 63-69 grams
Jumbo: 70 grams or more
