Celebrating all the amazing science that our undergrads have been up to this summer! A big congrats to everyone for their hard work! 🦙👩🔬
UTM LAMA Lab
The Language, Attention, Music, and Audition Lab at the University of Toronto Mississauga, studies how children of all ages learn about the sounds around them.
We are particularly interested in how babies/children learn about music and language!

The LAMA lab had a terrific time at Society for Music Perception and Cognition in Chicago this year. A highlight for us was the ARE committee’s panel on who gets to participate in music - focusing on how to incorporate the voices of children and adults from under represented backgrounds in music science
Lots of Canadian researchers here at the conference! Here is U of T Scarborough (UTSC) 🇨🇦’s Dr Schmuckler talking about how humans perceive pitch even when it’s missing!
40+ posters/talks from Canada - love the business meeting stats
Always karaoke
And more karaoke!
And of course, fascinating work from our graduate student PhD candidate Anne Cabildo asking how people engage with music in their everyday lives. Not pictured: our postdoc Dr Czepiel presenting her classroom hyperscanning data online and many other LAMA lab members who tuned in online! See you next time Society for Music Perception and Cognition !

Channeling our creative sides this summer at Crock a Doodle 👨🏼🎨🎨
In this week’s interview clip, we’re chatting with Bien Carandang 🎷🎵 Known for fulfilling any & all of Toronto’s low brass needs, Bien shared how formal training shaped their relationship with music, and how that connection has evolved to what it is today!
Thanks so much for sticking with us on Wednesdays! 🎵
And we’re back with our last bunch of interviews! Today we’re looking at the studio side of things with producer & audio engineer, Michael Gibbs 🎧🎹 He joins the conversation to discuss the parallels between music and other social experiences.
We’re not quite done yet! Check in on Wednesdays for our final few interviews with our lovely musicians! 🎶

This week, we’re building on our discussion of the social effects of music with pianist and vocal coach Hyejin Kwon 🎹🎤 In this clip, she shares a story about the experience of performing with others and how working toward a shared musical goal can shape the connection between collaborators.
Only a few more musician clips left so stayed tuned every Wednesday! 🎵
