The Most Important Decisions Your Child Makes 09/07/2021

The Most Important Decisions Your Child Makes.

It is said that we have 60,000 thoughts every day. Most of these thoughts occur privately within the silent chambers of our own minds.

As a parent, have you ever tried to take an inventory of your child’s self-talk?

How your child chooses to talk to himself/herself, from moment to moment, make up the most important decisions being made in their lives. And that is why we spend so much time focusing on self-talk at The Young Leaders.

Parent Challenge:
1. Ask your child to write down a paragraph describing their strengths.
2. Then ask your child to write another paragraph describing their weaknesses.
This challenge will help you become more aware of how your child perceives himself/herself, and that is a great starting point in helping them strengthen their self-communication skills.

Why Confusing Your Kids is a Great Thing 09/01/2021

Why Confusing Your Kids is a Great Thing!

As an educator, teaching leadership and public speaking skills to youth, I have uncovered some resistance to confusion. Some parents want to protect their kids from confusion because they are afraid such strain might harm them, and I think this concern is totally unfounded.

Confusion is an essential part of the learning experience. The definition of confusion is a state of being perplexed or not understanding something. How can you possibly come to understand anything new unless you did not understand it before?

Learning is the journey from not knowing to knowing, and that is why confusion is an inescapable and essential part of the learning journey! As it is impossible to succeed without failing, or learn something without making mistakes - you cannot understand new things unless you are willing to be confused.

Confusion is good. It is a great thing because it means you are on the path to growing and learning new things.

Youth Challenge:
Pick up a book that is difficult to read and understand. Now read two pages from this book and do your very best to understand what you read. Even if it is confusing, keep reading on. Ask questions of an adult about things you don’t understand. Write about your experience and share with your peers at The Young Leaders.

Do Your Kids Schedule their Priorities?

If you have started talking about your goals at home and encouraging your kids to set personal goals, it is important you help your kids manage their schedule.

We have all heard the expression of “youth being wasted on the young”, but that is not an inevitable reality. It does not have to be the case. You can start teaching your child the value of managing their time wisely from an early age.

Nothing can be accomplished unless you can budget the time for it. Kids have to practice their instruments daily if they expect to make any progress before their next class. The same applies to sports or any skill in life. Even relationships will deteriorate if you don’t invest in them.

Help your children keep a schedule. If they have set a goal for themselves, identify what they need to do on an ongoing basis to achieve their goals. Then ask them when they plan to take those baby steps. It is as simple as that.

How Public Speaking Changed My Life

When I was a kid, I had no confidence. I was a scrawny boy who was bullied at school and had no friends.

It was a very tough time in my life. Then one day my teacher, Mrs. Ayres, had told everyone in the class they had to write a speech. I was terrified. But when I came home from school and told my grandfather about the speech, he was thrilled.

My grandfather was a seasoned public speaker. He sat me down and he helped me write the speech which I then practiced rehearsing over and over again.

When the time came for me to deliver my speech something miraculous happened. My teacher selected me to represent my class in front of the whole school. And then something even more incredible happened. I went on to win the competition among all the other kids selected from their classes to speak in front of the whole school.

That was a definitive turning point in my life. My confidence skyrocketed. Public speaking became my platform to express myself. I started to believe in myself and my grades began to improve. With a stronger self-esteem, I started to participate in many extracurricular activities.

My life was changed by 1 speech and 1 man, my grandfather, who helped and encouraged me to speak up.

How to Transform Family Culture 08/05/2021

What types of conversations are you having with your children?

Business leaders tend to dedicate hours to planning initiatives and strategizing their next moves, while giving little thought to the important role their words can have on their own children.

If we are going to empower the youth of today and help them do all that we have failed to accomplish, parents need to step up their game and transform the culture at home to one that inspires self leadership.

Sadly, many kids are growing up neglected. They lack direction. Unless their teachers give them homework or their parents give them chores, they really don’t know what to do with themselves.

Exposure is a powerful agent. As the single most important role model in your child’s life, what example are you setting?

At The Young Leaders, we address a new leadership concept every week! Our program is designed to nurture 24 essential leadership skills to help our youth of today become better human beings and to be in the best position to achieve their dreams in life.
